Ground = Neutral, AKA negative. So you have a 12v+ and a 12v- lead that gets plugged in/soldered.

If you the step down you sent in this link, you could have 12v. Or you could rob 5v from your flight controller. Just to see if the 5v is bright enough for you, the `12v will be a lot brighter though.

I am a fairly novice flyer, so I agree that the hobby is pricey haha. When you are not fixing crashes you are upgrading :). 2 hours of repair for every hour of flight xD.
