That's just the way it is. Even various incarnations of Syma '5' controllers will not work at times with all '5' series quads. There appears to be 3 different firmware/revisions out there.

@ B3Master According to member Patton he found that his X5's range was very dependent on his radio's batteries charge level. He claimed it didn't take much of a discharge to impact range.

The newer 'i' versions have very good range. Here's a picture of the internals of the i6. Note it appears to actually have 2 antennas, as do the receivers.
