450 frame build - advice

Hi Guys... will be needing help and advice along the line.

Father Day gift off daughter - a new solder kit with meter!
This after I mentioned I was thinking about a quad kit building project and that my old kit was looking beat up!

Today I had a text to say Son in Law had ordered a frame - he messes about with cheap helis and a has about 10 - in various bits and pieces - so he looked on eBay.

Today I looked at motors - found some designated as for Phantom - so I don't see any problems with being suitable to a 450 frame which is about the size of my Phantom. I also found some others.

So can I ask which is likely the best option.... and what ESCs should I look for?

Any any other kit suitable..

What type of flying are you wanting to do? (flying, fpv, aerial photography, or all three types)

Its more about a build to learn about the bits and how they related and interact with each other. But having probably the second best Arial camera in the Phantom, its going to end up as fly and learn thing I suppose and maybe add a camera later. So I will aim at the same lift and flying capacity as the Phantom - which is the same physical size.

Thanks for that info.... been checking on these and found aussie suppliers . One charges $213 and the other £179 ! Sent an inquiry - guess which one! - to see if they have in stock.

I was on YT yesterday for hours watching the vids on setting up. I will be looking at the various apps later. Still trying to decide about cc3d or Naze32.
EDIT: Vids on YT indicate the ESCs dont have BEC and a separate one is needed - OR use different ESCs.
So would I be right in thinking any ESC with the same specification would be OK?
I am also trying to stay with Aussie suppliers to avoid getting much older waiting for a delivery.

Here are my favorite reasonably priced power components; SunnySky 2216 KV980 motors, ZTW Spider 30A small opto ESC's( 600hz, no programming needed) Castle Creations UBEC because it is small and is quiet. You can place it next to the Rx or FCB with no problem which is good since the 450frame is a bit tight. The SunnySky motors use sealed thrust bearings instead of the cheap ball bearings most of the chinese manufacturers use. They are extremely well balanced and use impressive quality components considering their price point. The motors are strong and efficient so you can prop it for cruising with a big payload or tearing up the sky if you wish. A 3s battery will give you surprising performance and flight times and a 4s is scary overkill. I'm pretty sure you can find the motors there. If you can't find the ESC's in country try the T-Motor S series. Same specs and no programming, just a bit larger.

I can see this becoming an obsession!
One question keeps popping up - Radios - I know it may be a sales pitch... bit I find every store I contact quickly see's the newbie knows nowt! So far all but one asks if I have a radio and which one.
Fact is I have none! You may have seen my posts about getting a credit refund from EB - snag is... it was marked as shipped in two days.. they have never moved that fast. No photo of the outgoing package - which they have always done even for a $12 order for Cheerson CX30 props and batteries.
Add to that in 5 days they have not replied to a "ticket" asking WHY.... so my guess is having dragged out the credit negotiations to the point I threatened them with PP dispute - they have disarmed that threat by issuing the credits - now my bet is after 25 days - I say where is it.. and guess it will lost in post and another round of tickets for insurance or whatever. The "lost" package is supposed to hold a Devo 10!

Jeez. If it wasn't for bad luck you wouldn't have any!! That is a shame, truly. Most of the forum members have a love/hate relationship with Hobby King. Some of the others seem to think Gearbest or Bangood are kinda ok. Like you, I have had mostly poor luck dealing with ebay. Living in the US gives me a lot of options to buy product competitively from distributors based here. I haven't had to purchase anything from ebay since June. I have to think that as large as the potential market is in Australia that the distributor base there is getting pretty good. Maybe there is a local RC club that can point you in the right direction. Always remember..........This is not a hobby. It is a disease!!

I forgot to jump in on radios. If the Devo never arrives don't go bottom feeding. A good radio can last you for many years and thru many models. There sure is a bunch of good ones out there. The Spektrum Dx9 seems to be the hands down favorite of the forum members. Very flexible and feature packed and can use the less expensive Lemon and Orange clone Rx's so you can have a single Tx for all your models by putting a $20.00 Rx in each one. The one I picked, and love, is the Futaba 10-ja. It is the only radio currently that is designed specifically for multirotors. I like the feel of the controls and the easy programming. The biggest downside is it only works with $60.00 Futaba Rx's. Anyway. Find a good one that fits you. You won't regret it.

Been mooching about on eBay, I seem to have something pulling me to Devo 7...only au$90 or so....which is why ?I opted for the Devo10 for the doubtful credit off EB. GJH suggested the Turnigy ..the try i6 is around au$75 and the Turnigy 9 is around au$115 and the pro is around au$170 ..there is carriage of $13+ . My thinking has always been to get the best affordable and latest version.
RCModelreviews on YT seems to think the Turnigy 9pro ..as gone downhill a bit. The I think save some $$ and hpjust get the old 9 version 9 channels and guessing it capable of selecting another quad once it's set up. So going out with ..say two quads and one radio...lets me fly both.
I will go and check the spectrum ...thanks for your help.

There is a full range of Orange Rx's and modules available as well. Jump on youtube and see what the community has to say about the radios you are interested in. Might help you narrow it down.

If you go with opto escs then you will only need the signal wire, and no external bec to power them.


I would also advise to do a little research on the Taranis if the budget is there. Google taranis vs spectrum and taranis vs futaba or any other radio, and you will see that it is the top preferred radio over most.

Forgot about the Taranis. They get good reviews. I actually recommended the SunnySky 2216. A more efficient motor. Also, ecalc has a +/- 15% margin of error(their disclaimer). You are better off using manufacturers data to help you choose the power system that suits you.

ecalc gets me in the ballpark, and shows me if I am headed in the correct or incorrect direction, and that is all I need. It is in their disclaimer. My tarot manufacture recommends a 5000mah 4s battery and it performs to my liking with an 8000mah 6s, so I do not always agree with the manufacture recommendations.

I found out about the 2216 980kv a search brought up different numbers from various website ... so I guessed a typo. I spent the biggest part of yesterday either here on the mac or "while watching TV" on the iPad checking odds and ends/prices/options and just now I am sat in a daze with about 30 little fly sized quads buzzing around my head!
With a 450 frame coming - my first thought was suitable motors and the a drop down list of bits to follow. Shudda realised there is no drop down list.... its a one line - a never ending procession of bits and I think the real starting point is pick the radio... and build to suits capabilities and adaptability to flight controllers.... or am I wrong!

I looked at radios which are in the au$500 plus range - nice but not for me just now - budgets and all that! The other bit is getting p&&&ed off with EB and their game with the supposed refund and my use of it for the Devo 10.
So if its games they want... I am going to open a PP dispute - even if its only outcome is to annoy the store!

The T-Motors get good reviews everywhere - and the one minus is their ESCs /no BEC built in.
I don't know enough yet ( why doesn't somebody write a book on all this!!) I have 20 books in the Apple iBooks store... so I can help with publishing!
Still trying to decide with Naze32 - cc3d ( I am likely to get both in case I need to change for some reason) or DJI Naza (au$200) DJI seems expensive for a first build - although I think something around a 550 frame or better still a home made frame from CF square section - with a camera onboard -it will be a must have!

News Flash: reply from EB about the Devo 10.... they say its out for delivery and that I did not select tracking!
I did for a $12 order for syma prop guards and landing gear - but not for a $140 order!!
They supplied two attachments which show the unregistered China Post number as being "Collection Shenzen ( GuangDong) ". Offered no explanation about the lack of photo of the actual package.
Advised I have no trust that a Devo 10 has actually been sent out - although some other package or content may have. I also advised a Dispute and I am wrong and receive the Devo 10 - its easy to cancel and I will order a Cheerson CX32!!! My boss said... while tut tutting and shaking her head.....that I dig my holes really deep! History with EB is on my side just now!

Will check out all suggestions and get back later.... thanks to all for help and advice.
