    Toy grade versus upmarket quads.

No, those aren't alternate facts. When I see a 350-series quad on sale for $450.00 with brushless motors, and the store quad specialist tells me that it will fly for eight minutes on a full battery charge, and I know that I can buy a Syma X8-series that will fly for approximately the same length...

    Toy grade versus upmarket quads.

Other than being equiped with brushless motors, what makes an "upmarket" quad superior to a "toy grade" quad? From looking at the online ad specs, the "upmarket" quads are within three-to-five minutes maximum flying time on a full battery charge for those priced under $500.00. Many of the...

Can you recommend a quadcopter *without* altitude hold?

Has anybody had any experience with the Syma X8 model that has altitude hold, or the new JJRC model that has it?

    Upgrading a toy-grade drone.

As for the JJRC H25. Although they're a generally good quad, the FCB in them don't hold up well under rough landings. Which they're prone to due to a hair-trigger throttle that will abruptly shut off all power as you try to land it. Causing them to drop like a stone.

    Upgrading a toy-grade drone.

So including all components to build my own from the ground up of the same size as the JJRC H25 or a Syma X8 (not including a controller), what am I looking at in terms of costs involved? I like the Yuneec Typhoon G quads in terms of appearance, but I'm not yet ready to commit to a $700.00-plus...

    Upgrading a toy-grade drone.

Any recommendation on a brushless motor that will fit in a body about the same size as a Syma X8 model? Any for the FCB?

    Upgrading a toy-grade drone.

What's the difference from building one from a open frame instead of using the toy-grade body? At least reusing the body cuts out the cost of the frame. Plus it encloses otherwise exposed delicate components.

    Upgrading a toy-grade drone.

I have a JJRC H25G (rebranded as Ai Freedom II) that I've been thinking of using as the basis for building my first drone with coreless motors and fixed hovering capability. My thoughts are to completely rewire for a new receiver board and controller, recycling the body. Is this possible and...

Legalize UAV/Drone flying in FL State Parks!

There's a well known restricted area in the Nevada desert outside of Las Vegas, that even military pilots are forbidden from overflying, without specific authorization, due to what we can only speculate about what is going on within the perimeter. And the government has the perimeter posted with...

Smya X8G Highly Updated and Improved User Manual

I learned the hard way myself this summer. Taking off from concrete or asphalt paved surfaces is one thing. Landings however, are best done on grass, or loose sand. Going to be spending the cold weather, repairing the lower fuselage of my JJRC H25, and replacing the FCB, which didn't take too...

Legalize UAV/Drone flying in FL State Parks!

This is not an issue limited to Florida state parks, as there is a similar ban in national parks, and many local, county, and state parks, across the country. Understandably in some areas, they don't want drone pilots while looking for a downed UAV, to unexpectedly meet up with a cougar or a...

Upgrades to rebranded JJRC H25G quadcopter

The landing struts are firmly attached. The problem being that because they are solid and there is no cushioning between them and the lower body, a hard landing results in lower body cracks forming. Either the throttle, or the FCB, has a hair trigger sensitivity. When I reach a certain point of...

Upgrades to rebranded JJRC H25G quadcopter

I tried isolation back in late spring, using rubberized chair leg/furniture leg cushions cemented to the bottoms of the landing struts. The result was that when landing, it would bounce around like a basketball. Clearly, some form of cushioning for landings to reduce the impact on the body is...

Upgrades to rebranded JJRC H25G quadcopter

I've had a couple of cracks reappear in the lower body of my rebranded JJRC H25G, that were previously repaired. I'm going to try a different approach to repairing them this time. Using Krazy Glue to repair them as before, only this time, patching over with aluminum sheet from a soda or beer...

Upgrade from the original FPV camera.

I will check out the various prices. I like that none are dependent on the onboard battery that powers the quad.

Upgrade from the original FPV camera.

I was in a Walmart in Missouri today, looking at Gopro Hero Sessions action cameras, when I noticed that Vivitar also produced a line of HD, and Wifi action cameras of about the same size and weight, at under $150.00 for the most expensive version. How do these compare to the Gopro line? I want...

would anyone buy a custom quadcopter frame?

I'm not sure 3-D printed fuselage parts would even stand up to extremes in temperatures during outdoor flying. How fragile are they during freezing weather? Will they warp or become soft from prolonged exposure to the sun on 85-plus degree summer days? And lower parts such as landing skids...

    Dead Dromida Ominus

The JJRC instruction manual for their H25-series quads is so poorly translated into English, it makes the German Enigma code of World War II look like a 1st Graders basic reader by comparison. Two steps forward, then three to the left, BEFORE one back....

    Syma X5SW Camera Weight

Syma X5-series quads are relatively small for carrying an aftermarket camera. In terms of relative size, think of micro quads as "General aviation", like a Cessna that you would fly with a private pilots license. The Syma X5 variants in terms of size, would be like a military fighter plane. A...

Ai Freedom II mods and upgrades.

I think that I may have found the cause of the uncontrollable takeoffs, with the three-blade rotors that I installed. Although they fit like the factory-original two-blade rotors, which it turns out are the same ones used on Syma X8-series quads, there's a small "step" on top of the "trunk" that...
