    Let's Talk Gimbals

It's a little, thumb dial on the lower, left-front portion of the remote control. It only moves the gimbal up and down (tilt) but is very valuable.

And yet I have a 3-axis gimbal? How is that? Let me put it another way. I want to be able to control horizontal movement of the gimbal with the quad standing still. How can I get that done?

OK, I get that. But take a look at my reply post to Renov8r, above. In your example, the gimbal is panning, but only because the quad itself is also panning. If I have a 3-axis gimbal, shouldn't I be able to pan the camera (move it horizontally) while the quad itself remains still?

    Let's Talk Gimbals

OK - I'm listening. So let's suppose my quad is hovering at 100 feet. I want the camera to begin a slow, 360-degree shot, panning all around the point where the quad is hovering in a stationary position. How do I do that while keeping the quad not only hovering in the same spot, but also...

Wow! An excellent link! Cleared a lot up for me - thanks so much. :)

    Let's Talk Gimbals

I don't think so. There are three, potential axes to a gimbal: Pitch (up and down), Roll (relationship of gimbal to the horizon) and Pan (horizontal). I can move my gimbal for Pitch (thumb dial on remote) and Roll (through settings) but not for Pan. Therefore, my gimbal is a 2-axis gimbal...

    Let's Talk Gimbals

The recent problems I have been having with choppy or jerky videos, have prompted me to consider gimbal operation and the function of the gimbal. I'm very new to all this, so please put up with a really basic question: I think I have figured out the difference between a 2-axis and a 3-axis...

I'm pretty new to all this, but I am satisfied with the "good" video posted above. I will be putting up a slower rotation video, but I'm sure it will not be shaky.

No. If anything, it was the other way around. There was a bit of wind with the good video and it was quite calm with the shaky video. I'm pretty sure all of this was because I had failed to remove the square piece of foam that is in the gimbal to protect it during transportation. That must...

I flew it quite a few times (6-8) before it fell off. I hope I didn't do any damage - everything seems to be working all right now. When I first got the quad, I also turned it on two or three times with the gimbal protector in place. I wondered why all I saw was gray on the screen. I don't...

Rick - Looking at the video I made this afternoon (and posted, above), I am really beginning to think that you hit it on the head. I strongly suspect that my failure to remove that square, piece of semi-hard, packing foam was the cause of the jerky videos I was getting before the piece of foam...

I feel like I took my car in to the mechanic, complaining about a noise in the engine that never stops, he wants to hear the noise, I turn the engine on and no noise. This video looks pretty smooth to me. I wonder what was going on before? I did shoot this in Tripod Mode, but I shot one just...

I snuck out early from work, knocked down a few quick vids, and am uploading one of them to Vimeo as we speak. Stand by ... (I can just sense the electricity in the air - can't you?)

Funny you should mention that. Last Sunday, I picked up the quad to go fly it out of the back yard, and this square piece of foam dropped out of the gimbal. At first, I was afraid that I had broken something. I tried to fit it back in and couldn't do it. Then I noticed the little, red label...

That's what I've been talking about here for some time - it looks jerky when I pan horizontally. Of course I can record video on board the quad - it's a Phantom 4.

Not sure what you are referring to here. Are you saying there is a setting that affects video stability of the camera?

You may be right about it possibly being a gimbal issue. I just saw a YouTube on gimbal settings and will review same on my app when I get home tonight.

No, not at all. I am not experiencing jitter. The horizon stays perfectly level. The problem for me only begins when I start to pan horizontally. Then, the picture will pause for a split second or two and then "snap" to the next portion of the video in a jerky manner. I will do my best to...

Thanks! Some great info. I am flying a Phantom 4. It would seem to me that, with a quad of that quality, I shouldn't be having this problem. I am going to try to upload a sample of one of my choppy videos as soon as I have time to figure out how to do it. Probably this weekend. I can tell...
