Syma X5C-1 Not Connecting

I just barely got an X5C-1 in the mail today and it will not connect. When I turn it on, the lights flash very slowly. Much slower than any youtube video of everyone else's quadcopters I have seen. Any idea how to fix it? It blinks between on and off about every second. I can't find any help online either :(
 
I noticed that if the transmitter is too close to the X5C when you try to connect it will not. Turn on copter, turn on transmitter, place coper on the ground, step back a couple of steps, move the throttle all the way down, all the way up and all the way down again. Should beep and then be ready to take off.
