RFT quads and quality

First I'm a newbie on here and appologize for asking dumb questions.

We've been Syma fans ever since purchasing a couple S-107g helicopters.
Very nice little units for the money.

But in the quad market , I'm still not very impressed with the quality.

The Syma X5 , I will say , so far seems to be a decent quad.

We bought a couple v222/v959 WL toys quads and sent them back . I felt they
had very poor feedback from the radio and were way too irratic.

We bought a Syma X1 for our nephew and all it does is flip over when you try to
take off.

We also bought a Syma X6 and the the thing shakes and irratically runs the motors
and simply will not fly. From having some Syma radio experience , I unscrewed the back
and found the radio antenna pointing straight down against the circuit board " thats got to be
the problem " BUT , after putting it in the upright position , it still behaved the same.
The remote it came with shows a picture of a helicopter on the screen.

Now ,,,, are we just having bad luck ? I'm not impressed that Syma is using many a WL toys
parts in their quads. Is there a better company out there that is still affordable ?
I'm not going to pay 3-$500 for a quad for a kid.

Thanks a lot for any feedback

I guess it's a crap shoot when it comes to " toy" quads.

The Syma X5 seems to be one of the better , more durable ones.

I just got my Syma X5c-1 on Saturday and am very impressed with it. I'm completely new to flying quads and was able to easily set this unit up and get it flying. So far so good!

We have a Syma X5C-1 on order as my son " in college" thought he wanted to ad a camera to his
and I wasn't going to pay $20 + for just a camera when I can buy another complete unit for $55 shipped.
Not exactly sure what we'll do with it but in this sport you can't have enough toys :) :)
I also bought some tri-rotors for $5 for two sets. Probably a waste but wanted to try em.

I work in IT and I use 3.1 amp USB chargers for iPhones and Droids. They seem to charge the X5c battery in about an hour. I also bought a 5 pack of batteries. One "tip" I thought of is is to make a label with your cell phone number on it. I came really close to losing my qusf last night while night flying in a field. Once I was up really high, the wind took it off course pretty quickly. I took a guess at what direction was forward , killed the throttle, let it drop about 60 feet and then when full throttle forward and thankfully my guess on the direction was right. SO... write your cell phone on the quad.

Great Idea on the phone number !!
If your battery takes an hour to charge , then it's only receiving 500 milliamps / 1/2 amp charge rate.
You'd never want to charge a 500mah cell at 3 amps as that is a 6C charge which will kill these small batteries.
1C is 1/2 amp , 2C is 1 amp . Thats the maximum charge rate I'd use. At 1 amp it would take a half hour to charge.
With lipo's , the slower the better . Thats why multiple batterys are a must.

XX - If your not going to use your lipos for more than a month , discharge them after charging to 3.85 volts per cell.
It also kills them to leave packed full. Many of these USB chargers go a little too high with a 4.30 volt cutoff.

We got another X5 to replace the defective X1 that we gave our nephew for Christmas.

This thing flys great. He's 12 , very quick mentally and has incredible hand / eye coordination.

He can do 360 flips in their house as they have a cathedral ceiling.

I thought it was funny that within the first 10 minutes of flying it , he commented---

" This thing requires an awefull lot of thinking " I thought it was just me being old , ha ha.

Well from what i have experianced with this hobby and it does hold true if you buy the cheap quads then expect cheap results. My Traxxas Alias Is a great quad but it was 150.00 bucks including more batteries for it.My 2 WL Toys V303 was over 600.00. I quit trying to get good flying over the cheaper quads. If you ever get to fly a decent quad then your idea of going cheap will go out the window like a bad nightmare. I say this from experiance. But we all have to learn either the easier way or the hard way. Good Luck on your flying, And always have fun.

Thanks QuadNoob ,

Yes , I have to keep reminding myself what these things cost when I get critical of a certain design.

I remember when a newbie rc parent would bring their kid to the carpet oval track we helped run
and you had to nicely tell them that the $50 Radio Shack car really couldn't compete but if they
wanted to run it a few laps during intermission they could.

When our son raced , it was nothing to lug $2000 worth of equipment to the track every week.
Back then , you had $3-$400 in just your box of round cell matched batteries.

NCFRC: Do yourself a favor and buy a Dromida Ominus for $80 or the smaller Dromida Kodo with a camera. Check out their advertisements and I can personally tell you, from my own experience, they take a licking and still keep ticking. They are built to take abuse.

The Ominus flies great outdoor in low wind.

BTW, not a dumb question at all!

Eddie

Thanks ,,,, What's your thoughts on the JRRC - H8C ?

It's 7.4 volt and uses bearings /or brass bushings on the prop shafts.

I've e-mailed Syma and the supplier RedRock many times about
the black X5 edition and with no response. I'm guessing they were
testing the market with a limited production run ?
Yes , all the white replacement parts are exactly the same and I'd
just have to spray with some lexan paint.

I don't have any personal familiarity with the JRRC - H8C, but I found this site for you on the Internet thst may help you out:
