Phantom 4 Pro as first quadcopter

I want the 20MP still image output from the Phantom 4 Pro but I also realize that DJI customer support ranges from terrible to non-existent and that includes warranty repairs. It seems like the $1500 Phantom 4 Pro is a disposable quadcopter in that regard. Crash it and buy a new one.

My question is whether it would be best to buy something like a Syma quadcopter to practice with for period of time before taking my chances with DJI.

If a starter or practice drone is advisable then I want the minimum that will provide this learning time at minimal cost. Or does it make sense to have a backup drone?

Why not, may as well learn the basics. For some of us it's about the joy of flying. It's nice to have a toy or two when you just wanna step out the door and zip around a bit.

Here's one to wet your whistle. All spares are available (it comes with spare props), it has enclosed gears, motor stop if crashed and quite sporty in high, and $22.

The WiFi FPV, camera version @ $35.

Do get some spare batterries and maybe more props too.

I have actually had very good support from DJI, and the repair process is pretty quick. I have read about the nightmares, but my experiences were very good.

Where are you located? I use State Farm for insuring my Inspire 2s, and it is only 60 per year for 5k coverage on each. (120.00 total) So much cheaper than DJI care.

You can always get insurance for it as has been mentioned before. Also it is definitely possible to learn on a P4 has it comes with loads of features like gps positioning and sensors that make it super easy to fly. If you were to learn on a say a Syma X5C, you would be well equipped for flying drones like the P4. You can also set the P4 to beginner mode which reduces the maximum range to 30m and slows the maximum speed down, which is great for when you're learning
