Newb to racing

Hi All,

I'v been flying micro quads for about a year (mainly my husban x4 / q4) Which are alot of fun. I then moved onto the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 as i thought it would be cool to fly the thing through my phone and out of LOS.

However, what a rookie mistake that was and within a couple of weeks, i was bored of the thing. It's a slow, unresponsive, limitied range and overpriced piece of poop. Cool idea for kids with rich parents but for anyone who wants to fly properly, its a piece of poop.

Anyway after alot of reading about quadcopters and seeing their capabilities, i have decided i want to build my own in which I can use for flying, fast, far and first person. Eventually i would like to race but for now, i just want to get get in the air.

I have a couple of questions, firstly, with a 250 size carbon fiber frame, i know these are designed to race, but i think its a good size for me to learn the ins and outs of piloting LOS. Is this size frame good for general LOS flight? I know it depends on alot of other factors, but generally? I want to master manouvering the quad before i start beneath and between objects.

Is it worth just sticking to an LOS set up for now, whilst i get to grips of flying properly, or should i just go all out and get an FPV set up and just take it slow learning to fly?

Also, finally, is there a way of transmitting video signal to an iphone/tablet, or is a dedicated FPV goggles or display the only way?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums. A 250 will be ok to learn on, if you want a really cheap FPV setup you can get one for $100, or if you want a nicer one ( suggested) you can pick one up for $100.
Here is a post I made on cheap FPV, skip down to the red writing toward the bottom.

If you have flown minis you should have orientation down fair, so you could start into FPV for the extra bit of fun.

Hey.

I'm relatively new to the hobby. I got the Hubsan x4 about two months ago after meeting a new friend who is into rc. After two months of flying the Hubsan I wanted to go bigger and better. My friend has lots of various quads including the QAV250.

Today he built me one in no time at all. He has built around 15 of them so he knows his stuff. The quad itself has cost £150 for all the parts, battery and charger. I've yet to buy the fpv kit, and goggles for £200 and a controller for about £180. For now aim flying LOS with my mates controller.

I had my first fly earlier, and despite being nervous enough to have the shakes, I found it quite easy. They are alot bigger than the Hubsan, and a lot more responsive but loads more fun. We are lucky enough to have a giant park behind the house so as long as the weather is good, we have the perfect practise grounds.

I highly recommend a racing quad like the 250. I cant wait to get more flying hours

One thing to note is that you should get one for what your wanting to do, a 250 is about the same as a 350 or 400. If you want aggressive flying you may want a 250, if your more into photography then a bigger one would be better.

Hi All,

Also, finally, is there a way of transmitting video signal to an iphone/tablet, or is a dedicated FPV goggles or display the only way?

Thanks.
Many of the toy FPV quads are using phones.
