New new! Excited to get started

Hi all,
I am very new to this! I am looking for a step by step guide to building my first Quad.

For example:
What is your main purpose?
  • FPV -Buy this frame
  • Carry Items -Buy this frame
  • Photos/Videos -Buy this frame

And so on...

I hope I am making myself clear. I have searched around on this site but there are so many threads that I thought I would just ask and someone could just point me in the right direction.

Thanks for any help

Thank you for help. I've read through some threads on here and see your comments a lot. Sounds like you are always willing to help someone out. That is great!
Never flown before. I'm about to purchase my first transmitter. Will a 6 channel be ok for this?

Hi RyRy , Yes the min you need is 4 channels 6 will give you a spare ( you would think 2 but you cant always assign channels) I started with the DX6i ( spektrum) but as I fly scale helicopters as well I have the DX9 as I need the extra channels , It really depends on what you like the look of and how much you want to spend ( there are some good second hand units up for sale as the new DX6 is out so your find DX6i /DX7/DX8
If you see some thing you fancy put a link on here I will be happy to look at it for you
I would say may be get a little micro quad just to knock about with so you get the hang of it a bit more before you really spend loads the CG022 i did a review of is really cheap and flys like its no crack very fast

I ended up purchasing the CG022 yesterday. Can't wait. I did watch your videos you had posted. I've been hanging around websites and watching other videos so I have an idea of the quadcopter I want to end up building. Just dont really know where to start. Thanks again for any help.

Welcome to the forums. You may also want to try this flight simulation app. It feels alot like flying a quad. It wil get you used to the mode 2 controls if nothing else. It works best on a tablet, but it can be used on both ios (apple) and android phones.

When deciding what you want to build take a look at this video. Might give you a taste for 250 (mm from motor centres) racing quadcopters.

Wow!! I just watched that video. 250 quadcopter? Is that what they are called? Is it basically just an FPV flyer? Where do I start with that? Do I start by shopping frames? Thanks GJH!

hey guys im new to all this rc stuff but i very eager to get into it i had a question but was not sure where to ask it so here go's . . i have a syma x5c and was wanting to do a few modifications on it such as a new antenna for my remote but i am also very interested in FPV i was looking at this kit http://www.readymaderc.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4_318&products_id=2280 but i didn't know how the camera would be powered with out wiring it to the quad and also the fpv headsed dose not come with a charger it just said to use an rc charger but there are a lot of those if some one who knew a thing or two could help me out it would be much appreciated

That appears to plug into the balancing plug on the battery. That is the white usually four wire connector that comes out of the battery. That is a good deal too, it also looks like it is almost pnp, from what I see you just supply power and it is ready.

So now you really have me looking at 250 FPV! I think that's where I'm going to start. I came across this video shortly after watching the one you recommended I watch.
What are your thoughts on this build? I love the idea of having it all laid out for me.

Oh no, the epidemic, I think it is spreading!

I really think it is great. It can be upgraded later and looks fun.

I think the frame is a little pricy, and it is out of stock.
After looking, IMHO you'd be better to get all of this from HK. But as far as what is here it looks great. Do you have a 3D printer? I think that holtneil likes them, though I can't say for sure. The FC is great. I personally like Mutistar batteries, as they are balanced speciffically for quads with a lower C rating to help cut down on weight. If you think you can't afford the Frysky, you might get a spektrum, orange, or lower lever frysky.

Thanks again for all your input. I have another question. I am teetering between 250 and 400. I really like the idea of FPV but more for capturing video than for racing. Although I know I'll want it to go fast :) I guess I just dont know about frame and gimball if I ever wanted to use a Gopro for my FPV. Just bought a Spektrum Dx7. Did I waste my money on that?
Thanks!!

No not at all. I have been looking to buy a good radio and many have suggested the DX7. As for the size most 250 quads will carry a gopro, if you want longer flight times go bigger. Mine is a 370, so you could always meet in the middle. 350 quads often get to arounf 40 mph/65kph.

Have a couple other questions for you. Can you tell me about prop balancing? What is a good one to buy? If I spend more $ for better quality props will I still need to balance them? Would you buy carbon?

Thanks again!

I would defiantly buy carbon fibre for anything 5'' and over. They flex less and thus are more efficient. As for balancing props I am not really qualified to say. I believe that it would be a really good investment as an unbalanced prop will wear the bearings in your motors a lot faster than a balanced prop.

Hi mate Yes go carbon fibre, as for balance the props have two balance points, the blade and the hub , this is how I do mine I have T blades if you have the normal props with a hub balance prop as in video one or stick clear tape on it to balance, then balance the Hub as in video 2
