Hello

As a former competition flyer of rc helicopters i bought my first drone, a Dji Mavic Pro. I thought it was an awesome drone but i sold it after some months because it was not legal to use in the country i was going to live in for some months.

Now i want to build my own camera drone and i want that insane range that the mavic has, also gps with return home function if possible. So is this possible with a diy drone?

There are pros and cons to DIY builds vs RTF
Pros:
-they're cheaper
-more interesting and satisfying to build
-knowledge gain - you'll learn about physics, electronics, computer skills
-versatility - you can build your bird exactly how you want it for your specific purpose

Cons:
-a lot of research to put together a list of compatible parts
-the build and software setup can be very complicated
-flying your craft is more difficult
-craft is more prone to the elements
-don't expect it to be "aesthetically pleasing" as an off-the-shelf quad
-don't expect all the bells & whistles that you had with your Mavic like video management from the Go4 app, obstacle avoidance, advanced flight modes, etc

Build your own:
Pros: much much lower cost to build and repair, also much better crash resistance over them plastic quads.
Cons: less features, more time to build.
Have fun.
