Hello all!

Just signed up here while reading some stuff about the starter drones i purchased and have been learning to fly on (Syma X5SW + X8C) and I also won a bid for a Phantom 2 at a fair price this week and awaiting delivery.

I am a hobbyist flashlight and laser builder on the side and work in engineering by day, So all things electronic intrigue me. I hoped to sign up and read some stuff here, and maybe even ask about a few ideas; as i am sure you guys have seen a lot of the stuff I'm wondering about.

Hope to be around for awhile!

Ohhhhh " laser builder"

My Phantom would look good blasting away with LASERS!

Yehawwww!

Cant wait to see what you come up with!

Welcome and have fun.

Thought about some crazy LED i have called Phlatlights.. they have optics and heatsink capable of driving them to 9A but would definitely need an external battery and driver.. super bright tho.

Lasers wouldn't be a great idea considering the eye hazards to myself and others (the ones I build are all eye hazards) and require safety goggles to operate.. maybe I'll do some photos or videos of a star cap green low power on one of the drones... that'd be a sweet view.

Cool, my original comment was a bit tongue in cheek. Maybe Photon torpedoes???

Welcome aboard fellow laser enthusiast !! :)

I built my first laser back in the eighties ... A Helium Neon tube driven by a modified car's ignition coil power supply circuit.
Later I modified it for modulation abilities and followed the "listening device" plans found in (I think it was) Popular Electronics.

Even later made a scratch-built CO2 laser you could weld with :p ... Home made capacitor bank (copper foil with sheets of glass) and spark gap
switching. Direct stimulation (no Xenon lamp) with saturated RF, Photon, and Electrical plasma injection via a HV traveling wave arc (basically
a "Jacob's Ladder") inside the gas. Eventually added a water jacket to keep the plasma cool (as you know warm plasma doesn't lase well).
Had even planned on eventually introducing "Q-switching" too, but the thing was already pumping over 40W as-is

Always wanted to build a Star Trek phasor pistol too, but the cost of ruby rods back then kept me from doing that ... lol ... ;)

Cool. I've spent all day fighting with my X8 today and getting irritated...

I charged the stock cell on their garbage charger and it took the cell to 8.44v.. when I can get the x8 to even turn on; it binds and as soon as I touch throttle it's shutting off on me =( No X8 today I guess I better get the X5 out.

Seems perfect. Nothing 'garbage' about those results.

8.4v is full charge voltage it was over to 8.44 and the drone didn't want to start at that voltage. I discharged to 8.39 and then it lit up and took off.

Also had to take off the silver prop caps I believe one was causing drag on a motor. Lipo is a learning curve for me as I'm used to using Li-Ion mostly in my projects.

Something don't sound right. There are many YouTube videos with folks using 3S LiPos.
I agree with you, It doesn't make much sense to me as well. It was the V5 board when I took it apart, fixed a few cold solder joints and still had the same problem.

It is still doing this, but I have an LED display with some banana plugs on it now monitoring charge voltage.. I'm not sure what is going on with it but I did successfully fly it today.. if it's not the battery it could possibly be the receiver board?
