Experienced RC Helis; new to quads; advice please?

I have some years experience of flying RC helis up to 450 size CP.

I'd like to get into the world of FPV quad flying with safety features (like auto-homing etc), stability control and a camera capable of recording good video. The ability to achieve stability in light winds is important too. There is a confusing range of kit advertised on the net and I don't want to spend a small fortune on a first entry but, on the other hand, I don't want a toy either.

I'm in the UK and shipping from USA stores is usually prohibitive. However, far eastern suppliers seem to manage it at reasonable rates. So, anything available either in the UK or from people like HobbyKing or Bangood would be OK.

All advice and suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you and Neil will have a lot in common, you'll find quads cheaper to fly, and somewhat easier to fly than a heli. Look into Hobbyking.com they have warehouses in the UK, and have everything you'll probably need. We use them probably more than any one store, just be sure to get as much as possible at once to avoid double shipping and try to buy from the nearest warehouse.

@holtneil

Thank you.

I'm an old customer of HobbyKing - even before they had any European warehouses. I was hoping for some guidance as to a choice of model, camera gimbals, GPS, etc.

Are you wanting to build your own or buy one that is already built? I pretty much only fly for video taking these days and I really like my diatone 500. I don't care too much for the integrated pdb so that is my reasoning with going with the diatone. It sports a gimbal and fpv setup, and it has plenty of power for speed.

With that said I am currently building a tarot 680 hex. It's not super enormous and not small and will have redundancy in-case of esc or motor failure.

As George stated; the Naza FC is my choice at this time. Very stable and easy to fly for aerial photography.

Thanks guys, I'll have a good look at your suggestions.

However, I wasn't planning on building but was looking for a basic device which incorporates the features I mentioned. Any suggestions on that front - please remember I'm a complete tyro as far as quads are concerned.

TVM - I was hoping to find something a little less expensive. Even the cheapest DGI Phantom is quite expensive by the time a camera is added.

Hi oldcelt , most say get the Phantom as its one of the best at that job , if you go for the phantom 1 its down in price as most want P2 or P3+
it will be above the £190 range , but the parts along are worth the cost Naza M full is £250 with GPS , Raj at align-trex.co.uk has a few Phantom 1 in stock Chat to him he may do you a deal , a basic 2D gimbal is about £30 max , turnigy action camera is £50 works really well
The hobby king nova ( phantom clone) is not much less than the real thing , I got the Phantom 1 for my wife she cant fly but gave her the Phantom and was flying first time the Phantom will fly right from the box fail safes are really good with return home and land , and auto landing if battery gets to low
For £190 your be looking at self build , or a toy quad with the return home headless mode (IOC on the Phantoms ) your find flying quads are easy if your a heli flier
If you want to build your own look at the clone flame wheel at hobby king £9 for the frame , then may be look at the multi wii with GPS its cheaper than the Naza M, I cant say if it good , The naza is the mutts plums and have never used the multi wii
if you go the toy route then I think the syma has one that will have the return home etc may be Jackson can add to this as I am not sure

Many thanks; will look into it. Sorry for delay responding - been incommunicado in the wilds.

Best I've found so far is £319 - Raj has one but £10 more!
