Whether you agree with the FAA’s requirement to register your drone if it weighs more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) so you can fly it outdoors for fun as a hobby this is now the law as of 12/21/2015.

I am sure you don't want to face the possibility of a penalty up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment for up to three years. You can view the full rule here: www.faa.gov/news/updates/media/20151213_IFR.pdf

When registering you complete the form with your name, home address, email address, etc. and you will be issued with a unique registration number, you can also use your drone’s serial number when registering. The problem I foresee with using the serial number is if you change drones you have to go through the process of registration once again. If you are issued with the FAA unique registration number it covers any drones you have. You can click HERE to go to the FAA website to register your drone/UAS

Drones/UAS have to be marked with your registration number and this can be done using labels, engraving or using a permanent marker and the number must be readily accessible, readable and legible for visual inspection. You may put the registration number in your battery compartment if you don’t want a visible number on external areas of the drone.

Well, well, well, a spin off business I'm sure the FAA thought about but, as usual, were too slow to act on. Hey and a really quickly set up web site just for that purpose. Things really moved fast on this one, didn't it?

I haven't read the law, but I am sure that there must be a stiff penalty for disobeying it. My question is, if a neighbor turns you in, who has to prove what they said you did? I have some really bad neighbors who shoot off Aerial Fireworks after the state curfew time, yet if you call the cops on them, they never seem to get caught. It's the old story that if the cop didn't see it, they didn't do it. So, the next question is, if the cop didn't see you fly your 'drone' illegally, who's going to come up with the evidence that you did and does the cop still have to confirm you did? I see this as a law that only gets some more cash out of your pocket and into the government and it is about as enforceable as the fireworks laws in most states. And how many cops have the spare time to look and see if someone is flying a drone and if they have it registered or not?

I registered Jan 20.....Got my $5 bucks back.....My number ends with 737...so was I the 737'erd to register?.....
I like the Boeing 737....a good number!

Im glad i like little quads that dont even weigh 50g and, bigger ones that can carry a video camera and not weigh 250g.

200mm quads and Mobius cams or nano fpv for the win.

New guy here. This stuff is very new to me as I just started with a quad under .55lbs or whatever and just ordered a Eachine 250.

So what's the deal? The govt overreach guy in me wonders if this is for the Govt to track quad buyers, know who has them etc... for future information gathering, laws, restrictions, control.... The other side of me wonders if it's such a bad idea in case of irresponsible quad owners doing things that are illegal... say flying around airports, low level flying around freeways, peeping tom stuff, flying over crowds... (not really sure of all the nefarious things you can do with a quad). Or is it simply that if a quad owner hurts someone or causes damage that person should be held responsible?

Thats what I did using Avery labels and Averys design program, you may have to cut them down for smaller quads.
