The Flying Bulldog

Hello.. Yes... I am a newb to this forum... But not a completely newb flyer... (Just a disclaimer lol) do I apologize this is long.
I have numerous RTF quads that I have had a lot if fun with. All of them are...well... Toys to be honest. I have plans to build a nice big camera set up (may even be a hex) with the naza v2.. Etc in the future but, for right now I am looking for something smaller/less expensive to a heavy lift but have it be an upgrade to what I have already.
My deliemma is since I am eventually going to do a heavy lift drone... Do I want to build a smaller unit (medium lift) so I can do a smaller camera for right now or do I want to just buy a smaller rtf unit. (Thoughts..comments)
With a almost 6 year old Son, whom likes to see our current quads zipping about and doing flips etc I would like being able to do more than just going up in the air and flying around taking pictures and landing.
So, the second question is if I would build a medium lift unit are they agile enough to keep my son interested in watching it as its flying..(think of the attention span of a 6 year old). Can I flip/roll them etc.
I really want to get away from "cheap toy, brushed motor, rtf quads) and about one of the only rtfs I see that even comes close to what i would want is the new jjrc x1. (Has good and bad reviews). So this makes me think... Just build one. (I am in the mechanical engineering and maintenance field so a build is no issue) But, as stated how agile are they? Before someone suggests, I am not really into the racing quads... At least not right now.. So please no suggestions of those.
So.. Buy...or build... If buy... Any suggestions?
If build... Suggestions for a medium lift quad (enough to lift a camera and maybe even fpv down the road but be agile enough to have fun with and maybe even do some flips if possible)?
A lot of questions...I'm sorry but after literally weeks of researching frames, kits etc, I'm just burnt out and looking for advise.
Thanks!
