Decisions... advise please

Hello.. Yes... I am a newb to this forum... But not a completely newb flyer... (Just a disclaimer lol) do I apologize this is long.

I have numerous RTF quads that I have had a lot if fun with. All of them are...well... Toys to be honest. I have plans to build a nice big camera set up (may even be a hex) with the naza v2.. Etc in the future but, for right now I am looking for something smaller/less expensive to a heavy lift but have it be an upgrade to what I have already.

My deliemma is since I am eventually going to do a heavy lift drone... Do I want to build a smaller unit (medium lift) so I can do a smaller camera for right now or do I want to just buy a smaller rtf unit. (Thoughts..comments)
With a almost 6 year old Son, whom likes to see our current quads zipping about and doing flips etc I would like being able to do more than just going up in the air and flying around taking pictures and landing.
So, the second question is if I would build a medium lift unit are they agile enough to keep my son interested in watching it as its flying..(think of the attention span of a 6 year old). Can I flip/roll them etc.
I really want to get away from "cheap toy, brushed motor, rtf quads) and about one of the only rtfs I see that even comes close to what i would want is the new jjrc x1. (Has good and bad reviews). So this makes me think... Just build one. (I am in the mechanical engineering and maintenance field so a build is no issue) But, as stated how agile are they? Before someone suggests, I am not really into the racing quads... At least not right now.. So please no suggestions of those.
So.. Buy...or build... If buy... Any suggestions?
If build... Suggestions for a medium lift quad (enough to lift a camera and maybe even fpv down the road but be agile enough to have fun with and maybe even do some flips if possible)?

A lot of questions...I'm sorry but after literally weeks of researching frames, kits etc, I'm just burnt out and looking for advise.
Thanks!

Would not be my choice. For a few $ more this is much more official.

It also comes with a very sophisticated 9-10 channel transmitter (many positive reviews on YouTube) that has also added many quadcopter specific tweaks, and you'll be to use it for any future builds.

It can handle a lighter camera like a Mobius or Runcam without breaking a sweat, no problem, just slap it on the included mount. Many folks with those class of motors on their 250s also mount heavier action cams (Gopro style) cameras, but it will slow it down a tad..

With CC3D FC you can tweak it to your hearts content. It has a couple of flight modes (with a touch of auto leveling or full manual) that will enable you to flip it with ease.

Thanks Jackson for the recommendation! Not really wanting to go with a racer BUT.. I am sure there are fun thing that can be done with it. Maybe I should look into them more as I am sure the agility of them is extremely high. The rt9 transmitter is what I was going to use on the heavy lift unit when I get to building that.

Have to go watch some reviews of the quad now.
Thanke
