Another newbie here with a first build. S500

Howdy! So my son and I are building our first quadrotor. I have no real experience with RC vehicles but I sure love to tinker with stuff. So we started doing research and buying parts. We setteled on an S500 quadrotor frame, with sunnysky 980kv motors, 4x30amp SimonK ESC, and a kk2.15 flight control board. It came as a kit on Ebay. I'm still waiting for a battery, charger, radio and receiver to come in. I burned myself at least 5 times learning how to solder. But other than that, it's been a really fun build. I'm sure I will be looking for help on here and hoping to learn. I have had cheap RC foam helicopters and planes before and I am excited to get this thing off the ground.

Crashing is pretty much the norm, unless you want to just cruise around.

How about something that's not a quad? I like watching this guy's flight vids. His builds are put together in a rather haphazard way to say the least, but he does some nice things in the air.

Hi mate and welcome to the forum , as you have the Kk2.1.5 get the flash lead and reflash with steveis1.8s1pro its super stable and will great on the s500, also most quads fly really well on the default setting on steveis code
You didnt say what props you have 10x4.7 would be a good prop size on that size quad and size motor and your ESC will be Ok at 30 amps

The Props that came with the kit are called 1045. I'm going to assume that means they are 10x4.5. Do you think these would work for now or is there a good reason to upgrade right away? Also, I have never flashed anything before. I am just a beginner. Where do I go to find this "Flash"

Hi They will be ok you will find the plastic will flex in flight , so the quad will wallow a bit , also they can and will get stress fractures and snap , so after the test flight buy some Carbon fibre 10x 4.7 this will stop the wallowing and will give you loads of extra lift , dont forget to balance any props plastic or Carbon , so look into a prop balancer this will stop any vibrations which will upset the FCB and if bad enough will knock out motor bearings , if you take your time and build it 100% right with good balanced props it will fly as smooth as butter

I'm almost ready to fly. Just waiting on my battery charger. I'm basically done with the build. I just noticed however that one prop adapter is too large. It will fit the motor shaft and tighten on the prop. But it is clearly larger than the rest. I already ordered new ones but they are a week away. How badly would a quad fly with one over sized prop adaptor? Should I not even attempt to fly it until the replacement arrives??

Got the prop balancer. I got them pretty well balanced I think. Even if they are not perfect. They are much better than when I started. Thanks for the good advise!

Hi the FCB will level the quad ok even with extra weight on one motor , its good for the test flight , but Dont tune the FCB till the prop mounts are the same

Tried to get it off the ground last night. It wants to flip over as soon as it's about to take off. I calibrated the ESC several times. I confirmed that I have the motors spinning correctly and that I have the props in the correct position. Any ideas?

Well, in my experience, the kk2.1.5 is a wierd board, and for what you pay for, is what you get. There, luckily for us, is a lot of configurable settings, like PI, stick scaling, mixer editor, and receiver mixer, all of them could be the source of your problem. First, go to the receiver mixer-editor, connect your receiver to the kk2.1.5, and move each stick around, one by one. When you do this, hopefully, you will see certain values going up and down the scale. Each value has a label, and when you raise a certain stick for it, let's say aileron, hopefully, when you move the aileron stick, it will adjust the aileron values on the kk2.1.5. If it doesn't, and it's adjusting the values of another channel, let's say throttle, then you must take it out, and find the right port for it. This will take some trial and error, and you will have to do this many times, for each diferent channel.
