Holy Cow!

I have been flying a Syma 8XSW which I got for around $100.00. Whenever I take it out, the wind is a huge problem. I have to fight constantly to keep the wind from grabbing it and pushing it behind me. Once that happens, it is extremely difficult to get back. Most of the time, I just have to hope I can shut it down before the wind slams it into something solid or blows it out of sight and out of control.

There is always some degree of wind where I have to fly it. It is very light, but it only takes a light wind to make controlling this drone very difficult. I am well aware of the fact that controls reverse themselves once the drone is behind me. It doesn't matter - I can use the controls properly, but once the wind gets it, it's gone. The only way to fly it is to keep it always directly in front of me and facing directly into the oncoming wind. Taking it up more than 40 feet is asking for it. When I do that, the wind takes over. Not much fun.

So, on Thanksgiving, we went to our youngest son's house. He was out in his backyard patio with a Phantom quadcopter, trying to figure out how to get it started. He had borrowed it from his employer - a school district. Of course I told him to stop immediately - you can't take a drone up in a constricted area like that with umbrellas, tables, bushes and trees all around. If I had tried that with my drone, it would have been blown into something within seconds. You have to be out in a big, bare, flat field, right?

So he cranked that bad boy up and I watched as it went straight up to about four feet and just sat there, solid as a rock. Then it shot straight up in the air to a height of several hundred feet. I couldn't believe it. It was still directly over the takeoff spot, but now way, way up there. Then he flew it a long distance away - I had to go out in front of the house to see it, three blocks over. It was so far out I could hardly see it.

I think you know what I'm trying to say. The difference between a Phantom and my dinky little Syma is the difference between a 747 and a Cessna. I HAVE to get a Phantom, that's all there is to it. Did I mention the Return Home feature? He hit that button when the quad was God knows where out there and here it came .... landing a foot or so from the original takeoff spot.

The bad news? The Phantom he had (I think it was a 4) costs $1,500.00. It comes with all the bells and whistles (except goggles). I don't care. I'm doing it.

I still use the phantom 1 great tool, the new one are a mega price but do a great job
I talked to my son just now. It was a Phantom 4. I'm wondering what the difference is between a 3 and a 4? If there isn't that much, I may save a few bucks and pick up a 3. Know anything about that?

Unless you are going to do serious, professional photography, you should look at the DJI Mavic Pro. Same company, same quality, same flyability.

There are definitely differences. Phantom has more obstruction detection, a few more intelligent flight modes, better camera.

The Mavic is much more portable, and affordable. Do some research.. Check out some YouTube videos comparing Phantom to Mavic.

I'm flying a Bugs 3 to learn how to manually control a drone, and recently purchased a Mavic refurbished. You can find new ones at the moment for 899.

If you're looking to save money, a refurbished Phantom 4 (standard model) can be had on Amazon for $799. That is also an option. They discontinued the standard in favor of the Advanced and the Pro, but they are good flyers. Same camera as in the Mavic.

You may also want to consider the Autel Robotics X-Star.

It also has GPS that allows stability in the wind, return to home, orbit, & fly pre-programmed missions. The camera & gimbal are outstanding, & unlike DJI, the customer service & warranty are excellent.

I purchased mine as a refurbished quad, but there was no indication it had ever been flown. Refurbished Autels are presently on sale for $549.

I have been so busy checking out all of the recommendations here, that I haven't had time to thank all of you for making them. YouTube sure has a wealth of videos about drones, doesn't it? I have spent a lot of time watching drone videos and plan to continue in the future. My biggest fear is spending a lot of money on a drone and then crashing it or losing it. I am seeing that even the most stable drones can run into trouble.

If you are flying the X8 proficiently, you should do fine with any of the quads suggested. There will be a learning curve when it comes to the technology, but you're already using YouTube to learn, so just keep doing that.

Did ya read his post? :)

Have you got it high rates?

You. You need to put it into high rate/speed to deal with wind. Look on the TX LCD just left of the battery meter. It will either show L (low) of H (high). It always starts in L, hit the left shoulder to get it to H.
Ah. Sounds good. I will check it as soon as I get home. Thanks!

Don't forget the Phantom 3 Standard if you want to go $reasonable$. Under $500. I love mine!

It has limitations as to distance. But 1/4 mile is enough for me.
Good luck.

OK, boys - after a LOT of YouTube video watching, I have opted for (and ordered) a refurbished Phantom 4 for $799. It should be delivered today. I plan to pick up an iPad mini for visual control, a sun shade, a couple of extra batteries, and a new wife. Mine is not very happy with my latest venture.

Still a shame that you didn't have an inexpensive quad that you could have learned to actually a fly.
As an old guy one reason I wanted a quad was to work on my eye hand coordination. As they say, use it or lose it. :) There is a certain sense of accomplishment when things finally 'click.'

I know. It is a shame. But I think I have reached the limitations of the Syma based on the never-ending, strong winds in my area. After seeing what a Phantom 4 can do, I think I am making the best move. We'll see. Thanks for your continuing help and support.
