New to flying, just built a quad. Need help with battery issues though.

Hiya, Brand new flyer here. I spent the past couple of weeks building a quad copter, I probably should have started with something more simple, but I enjoy a challenge.
I have now reached a point where google is no longer helping me though
Quadcopter flies great, but when the battery gets low, instead of just getting slower and gutless like my RC cars always have, one or more rotors will just stop spinning mid flight. This has caused me to break 5 propellers in the past couple of days. Is there anything I can do to set some sort of auto land or anything a bit safer?
This also leads me to my second question, on my Turnigy i6 TX there is a battery gauge in the top right hand corner, this stays at full until the last moment, but by then it's already too late. Is there anything I can do about this?

I appreciate any help anyone can give, as this is baffling my mind.

The specs of my quad are:

Naze32 funfly (no mag or gps)
12A afroESC 1kh
Multistar Elite 2204-2300KV
Turnigy i6 TX
Turnigy ia6 RX
Turnigy nano-tech 2200mah 3C Lipo
HKing color 250 frame, and bundled PDB
5x3 props.
I'm using Baseflight. Once I get more experience I may eventually use Cleanflight, but only if it's absolutely necessary.

You need a lipo alarm.

We do not run lipo batteries until the battery is completely discharged. Never ever drop the voltage below 3.0 volts per cell.

I land at no later than 3.65 volts per cell. These will catch on fire and destroy all of your hard work.

Get one on of these to plug into the balance port of your battery.

You get set the voltage that will trigger that alarm buzzer.

• Alarm set value range: OFF-2.7V-3.8V

Assuming a 3S battery setting it to 3.5V means the alarm will sound when your pack gets to 10.5V.

To actually monitor your pack voltage on your radio's LCD screen you need one of these.

Firstly I would like to apologise for the late response, there were some nasty storms last week that knocked out my phone line, and iv'e only just got internet back now. Thank you both for your replies, I'll get a battery gauge ordered As for the voltage receiver, I'll stick with what I have for a while before getting that receiver, I Know my TX and RX support PPM but I haven't figured out how to use it yet. Is there any advantage to using PPM when normal wiring works perfectly?

PPM is lighter due to less wires, cleaner, and easier for maintenance.
