I can see this as a useful recovery system on the larger, expensive quads like the Phantom 3 or 4. No one wants $1,300.00 quads slamming into the ground because of a power failure or control loss. The only thing that concerns me is whether or not the chute could be deployed manually from the controller? That would be useful if a power failure results that causes the quad to do a straight down catastrophic descent. The device only activates if the quad tips over flips over as said in the video. A catastrophic descent without deploying the chute would mean a catastrophic crash.

I fully agree on a manual release of the chute. Most of my failures float pretty much straight down. Deploying in a tumble would seem to me to wrap the chute around the copter,thus defeating the purpose. Of course the neat plastic wrapped bundle of pieces would be a big plus,lol.

The canister would have to be mounted to the side - the center of my three aircraft are populated with the F.C.. And I have a GPA mast, video transmitter, telemetry.... position would be an issue, not to mention balancing to get the C/G back where it should.

And then there's the issue of the nature of the failure - if the copter pitches over, you can't predict what side it's going to go over on - the chute can easily get tangled in the props.

Yes..Not all of us have large crop fields to fly in. I live in the desert..plan on having to climb into cactus to retrieve my quad someday!
