Buying my first racing quadcopter need some input

Yeah, it was. I originally plugged the battery into the quad so I could check the remote settings in CleanFlight. The video I mentioned before pointed out that it wouldn't talk to the quad unless the battery was plugged in (meaning the USB alone wouldn't be enough power). In my case it didnt talk either way, haha, but it did allow me to check the motors which was exciting. That was the first time I saw it do something other than beep and flash the LED's. I was actually just about to try messing around with the arming now. I'll let you know how it goes.
