When you say you're "new to quadcopters" how many hours of quadcopter flying have you under your belt? Also, you bought a quite pricey quadcopter for a first go machine I think. With a low margin of experience you should have started with a quad that was fairly cheap and could give you the experience you need for flying the Phantom 3. I've been flying a very short time with a U818A (small quadcopter) it isn't something you just hop on and expect to react to your commands on the get go. It does react, quickly! In fact it will migrate, it seems to every tree in the forest because you are not yet able to judge the closeness of obstacles. Well, the Phantom, even though heavier, is still going to react to commands from your remote the same as the small quads. The mastery comes in he use of the remote rather than the action of the quad. The inexperienced flyer has a tendency to over-react and under-react on controls when panic takes hold. Hence it's TREE 1, QUAD 0.
