Well it took all of 4 flights to break my new drone. Flying in front of cell towers clearly caused it to malfunction and take a nose dive full speed into the trees. Broke camera mount and both landing legs. Hopefully that's all. Too scared to try it right now.

I've lost control around power lines and even a chain link fence caused my video to go whacky lol. Use caution flying around metal structures and high voltage.

As with all pilots, you won't know until it happens and are able to walk away from the crash!

Thankfully it survived. Gonna have to super glue legs and camera mount but the she flies!!! The anticipation was killing me. Flew it up the very next tower, albeit not as close this time.

Got to watch a guy hang out of a helicopter for about 20 mins today, looked like fun. I couldn't help but think how fun it would be to get some close up video with my quad lol.

Worked with helicopters on a few cell towers. One of the reasons that made me want to breakdown and get a drone.

Well, try this on for size, a friend of mine used to service the warning lights on the top of a 900 foot radio/TV tower. He rode a one man elevator to 600 feet and had to climb the remaining 300 feet outside the frame with only his safety belt and carrying all his tools and spare lamps in a tote bag tied to his safety harness. Used to take him 30 minutes to make the 300 foot vertical climb.Then, he worked for about an hour on the lamps while sitting on a 2' x 2' platform with his harness attached to safety rings. Said it was exhilarating looking out over the landscape. Even more so when a small plane flew by and the pilot waved to him. He asked me to do it for him once. I told him where in Hell he could go and never spoke to him again. As far as I know, he still doing that.

Keep in mind that flying a quad anywhere near a manned aircraft is illegal. According to the FAA.

There has been discussion about flying in front of Cell Tower antennas. There is a chance that the cell transmitter is over powering your quad receiver as you fly in front of the cell antenna. Causing you to lose control.

It was a one man elevator about 2' x 2' square that went up the center of the tower. After that it was a 300 foot climb on the outside of the tower. Vertigo is my middle name and I would not climb it!

Yup. Those are only on the big boys, ie transmission or broadcast towers.

Oh yeah I know buddy I'm always on the lookout for helis when I fly. I've heard that if a helicopter has to maneuver to miss hitting your drone you are in BIG trouble with the feds. Not worth it lol.

Reminds me of a story lol, I was once up on my roof doing some repairs, about 3 stories high. Wifey decides "she's gonna come up there too, wants to see what I'm doing" lol.

She gets to the top of the ladder, looks around, says "eff this sheet, your crazy"! and climbs back down.

Of course I told her what it takes a set of to get on a roof lol!

I climbed one tower in my life. Several times while in the ARMY. It was at an Air Force Communications site in FeldBerg, West Germany on Mount Kolbenberg. We would show up usually in the middle of the night. On Alert. In our truck towing a generator. Complete with M-14s and one M-60 machine gun. The Air Force civilian guards would freak out LOL. They were not armed. After getting cleared we would set up the truck with the radio gear and generator. And then proceed to climb about 75 feet to mount our antennas (we called them horns) on the side of the tower, The Air Force in their wisdom would not let the Army leave any antennas on the tower for next time ughh.

After we were all up and running we would climb to the top pf the tower. I think it was 100 meters. Check out the view and enjoy the sun if it was summer time. Much to the chagrins of the Air Force types.
Oh and we did it without safety gear. Not a recommendation. At 18 we were all crazy!

As I was looking for some pictures in my shoe boxes I came across several YouTube videos of the tower today! YOUTUBE IS AMAZING!

Excellent story. And an awesome tower. My father was in the army in Germany. I actually spent my first year of life there on base.
