    Frankendrone update 5/12/2017

I have to agree with you regarding the APM flight controller/Mission Planner combo. Too bad they are no longer supported. I have three aircraft that use APMs and I really like them.

    Newbie questions. Please help

Depends on what size battery pack you are using. 2S lipos have two cells, 3S have three cells, etc. You should not go below 3 V. per cell and you should not charge up more than 4.2 V per cell. For my 3S lipos, I set the voltage failsafe to 11.5 V and for 4S I set it to 14.5 V. For my 6S I plan...

    Hot Motors!

Before I can power up the ship, I need to remove the APM Power Module as it's max voltage tolerance is 16V. In it's place, I will use a 5V BEC to supply power to the F.C. and use an Atto Pilot Voltage/Current sensor to provide the APM with voltage and current info in order to trigger the voltage...

    Hot Motors!

Latest Update 5/01/2017: I installed the T-Motors on Frankenstein today and I received the 16000 mAh 6S lipo I ordered from GetFPV - it is a monster! I put it on my APM #2 ship, which will be the first to test the new motors. I cannot power up the aircraft yet as I need to remove the APM Power...

how dangerous is it to fly over water?

It is more of a psychological thing than anything else. I have flown over water with no problems. You simply need to make sure that you have thoroughly preflighted your aircraft, you have an adequate charge for the intended flight.

    My Journey In This Hobby

It is hard for me to believe that it was about two years ago when I decided to take the leap and begin learning to fly and build multicopters. It began when I bought a little Hubsan X4 and read the book "Build Your Own Quadcopter", which basically was a pitch for buying an Elev-8 quadcopter from...

Need help with setting up arm switch

My quads use APM flight controllers which permits one to choose to have the props spin or not when the motors are armed. I don't know if you have that option or not, but you might want to check what configuration choices you have.

My ESC's keep beeping after connecting battery

The only time I ran into this problem, I had something misconnected. For example, I had one of the flight control (rudder, I believe) connections reversed, so signal went to ground and vice versa. If your FCU isn't getting power, that's the first place I'd start looking - where does it get it's...

    Hot Motors!

Today, I installed one of the T-Motors on my quad. I was concerned about having mounting holes that would match the motor to the mount, but there were four holes that matched. I connected the copter remotely to my computer, via telemetry, and ran a motor test to check the spin direction and then...

    Hot Motors!

Have some news since I posted last.... I tried a short flight with one of my two video platforms - and again the motors were really hot. It was calm air just after the sun went down and the air was cool. I decided I don't want to risk a crash so both copters are grounded, pending motor...

    Another Online Ordering Horror Story

I did get Amazon's attention by going to their facebook page and posting a comment. They will investigate internally, which is good news, but I suspect, as ArmyVet posted above, the cockroach will disappear only to reappear as someone else. I believe that I will get credited for my purchase...

    Another Online Ordering Horror Story

I have read a number of stories about people getting ripped off ordering stuff online, but I've had good experiences, usually ordering stuff via Amazon, but occasionally on Ebay and other websites. But I got burned on Amazon, so I thought I'd share my story: I was in the market for a camera for...

    Hot Motors!

I weighed my copter earlier today to confirm, and to my astonishment, it weighed in at 5 lb, not 3 as I originally stated. So, it's not surprising that my Tarot motors were getting hot. Looking at motors with more power seem to require 6S lipos, but I'm pretty much constrained to 4S, as I have...

    Hot Motors!

For 1.3 Kg thrust, I assumed that the spec meant for a single motor. If this is the case, then 2.6 Kg thrust should be fine for my aircraft. Since it is intended to be a video platform, I want a docile, stable aircraft. The only video I captured was onboard stabilized video from the GoPro, which...

    Hot Motors!

Okay, so this isn't my first build, but it's a scratch build - an Elev-8 built up from spare parts lying around - I call it my Frankenstein quad: The frame measures around 28" or 711 mm. and AUW is around 1.4 Kg. The motors are Tarot 4006 620 Kv with 13"5.5 pitch carbon props. I'm using a...

    New Drone Build! Any Help?

Any idea what everything weighs? The full up weight (including battery) will help determine if you have selected motors with sufficient power. If you're using a GoPro camera, bear in mind that there is latency - I'd recommend a CCD camera. Check this out...

    Sky camouflage

Wow, I hardly think that ISIS is monitoring this forum in order to get ideas for furthering their nefarious deeds. This being said, I am somewhat concerned about a statement made earlier about flying in national parks or something to that effect. Flying in national parks is strictly verboten...

    ardupilot

I do know that DJI offers the creation of waypoint missions, though I believe you do it "on the fly" - I don't really have any experience with it. Mission Planner will allow you to control all aspects of a waypoint mission. You can specify the altitude along each leg, you can specify what the...
