Hardware driver to allow the communication to take place between your computer and the flight controller. Windows device manager will show if something is not correct with the drivers. It will look like a hazard sign if that makes sense.

It sounds like it may be a driver issue. Have you checked your device manager to ensure all drivers are installed? It could be a faulty cord or antivirus software blocking it.

I dislike that you can't fly out of your yard since it sounds like you are a responsible drone pilot. There are commercial off of the shelf drones or you could custom build one that will not geofence you in as long as you stick with the initial firmware...

That's concerning as I have one lol. Fortunately I got five and usually 2-3 is all I have needed when flying it. How many batteries does it come with? ***Edit*** No concern at all now that I searched and they are available everywhere when looking online.

Active track should work if the drone is slightly behind you, or couldn't you just have enough distance between you and the drone to have in front of you in view? You could also crop so that it would appear whatever was in front of you to be the focus point.

Why are you checking your phone wifi connection? I have the mavic air and I think they connect the same way, but I have never checked my wifi before I fly. Does your phone plug into the remote?
