    Holy Cow!

I have been flying a Syma 8XSW which I got for around $100.00. Whenever I take it out, the wind is a huge problem. I have to fight constantly to keep the wind from grabbing it and pushing it behind me. Once that happens, it is extremely difficult to get back. Most of the time, I just have to...

Recommendations for best sub $250 drone for 11yr old

My suggestion is, pay more attention to price than to features. Why? Because there is a good chance your son is going to lose or crash his first outdoor drone, no matter how much he has the hang of flying a small drone indoors. Outdoors, there is something that does not appear indoors - wind...

First Flight With Syma X8SC - Success!

Thanks, Jackson. Looks like some sound advice.

First Flight With Syma X8SC - Success!

I found Syma X8 series replacement batteries on eBay. They are all rated 2000 mAh. Will that do the job for more flight time? Didn't see any at 2500. I just double checked. The 2000 is what comes with the drone, stock, so that shouldn't be any improvement. I'll keep looking ....

OK, boys - you talked me into it. The upper and lower body shells are on order. Six bucks apiece - seems reasonable to me. I will attempt to put the little guy back together.

First Flight With Syma X8SC - Success!

I had no trouble at all with the new Syma. It lifted off nicely and I had it under control immediately. I was heading into a pretty stiff wind, so I kept the quad going into it as much as possible. I was even able to make a video of the entire flight - first time I have made a video. The quad...

The shell is available and at what I think is a quite reasonable price. OK - I'll send for it. I guess building these things is as much the fun as flying them.

I know. But "dropping" the guts into the new body involves soldering and re-wiring, doesn't it? And running the wires out to the four propeller arms - that requires a LOT of rewiring.

    Range

The body consists of four, propeller arms. The arms are part of the body - they cannot be disconnected and put back on again. One of those arms snapped off completely. As I see it, this means I will have to get the top and bottom halves of the quad body, remove the guts from the old quad, and...

I don't think I will, Rick. Repair requires rewiring the entire quad and that's way above my present pay grade. I did receive the X8 on Thursday. I put it together yesterday and plan to take it out this afternoon. But I am keeping everything with regard to the X300. Perhaps some day ....

I didn't lose the Syma. I lost an XK. I think it was a combination of the wind and out of range. The wind got it while it was still in range but just on the edge. It quickly blew it out of range. I could no longer control it because it was out of range. Bye bye baby.

The reason I say I think it's all about the transmitter is that I just got a Syma X8SC. It comes with a transmitter that gives it around 100 yards of range but I learned that, if I want to go to a Syma X8G transmitter, it will work on my X8SC and increase the range to almost 500 yards. This is...

Got The Balance Charger. Now What?

Excellent. I kind of figured that I was getting ahead of myself with this charger. I will do exactly as you suggest - hang onto it until I move up in class with my quad. And BTW - I notice that I inadvertently purchased a knock-off in my balanced charger. When I really need one, I will pay...

I think range is a function of the transmitter you are using. That about it?

Got The Balance Charger. Now What?

Taking suggestions from a number of guys here, I purchased a LiPro Balance Charger. It came today. I don't have the slightest idea how to use it. Here is what my battery looks like: I ran all the YouTube videos I could find on how to use this Balance Charger, and none of them showed it...

    Drone Down!

It wasn't the Syma that went down. It was an XK X300W and replacement parts for that sucker are not so easy to find but I did find what I need. Sadly, it is both the top half and the bottom half of the quad body, which means that I have to disassemble the damaged quad (which I did - took me...

Thanks, Mike. Since posting this thread, I did a bit of nosing around on the Net and learned a lot. I guess there are lots of them out there. I found one at Hammacher Schlemmer for $250.00 that has a half a mile range. Not too shabby.

    Drone Down!

Absolutely. I have not thrown it away because I can't bring myself to do it. The only question would be, did I damage one or more of the motors by spinning the props while it was up in the tree. Have an idea?
