X580 Quad won't fly, just rolls over to one side

Hi guys,

I am relatively new to the world of quadcopters and I have never flown one either. I just finished building my first quad. I decided to go with a combination of X580 frame and KK2.1 board (v1.6 firmware) from Hobby king. My motors are 800Kv supplied by Turnigy plush 25 amp ESC's. The whole apparatus is powered by a 2700 mah 4s battery.

I am using 11" x 4.5 props. The final weight of the quad came out to be 1282 grams.

I am having no luck in getting this apparatus up in the air. All calculators suggest that it should fly just fine. I have double checked my motor layout, prop mounting, rotations, and everything else I can think off.

Here is my motor layout based on the picture below:

Top left: M1, turning CW
Top right: M2 turning CCW
bottom right: M3 turning CW
bottom left : M4 turning CCW

At about 30% - 40% throttle, the quad tends to just 'roll over' along its center axis but never leaves the ground. I mean, M1 and M4 lift up but M2 and M3 just sink into the ground.

All Esc are programmed the same way. All motors start up at the same time and seem to running just fine. What is it that I need to be looking at next? Is it the KK board? do I need to adjust my roll/pitch as I increase the throttle?

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem? Things to double check?

Thanks

Hi mate i know this may sound silly but you do have the props the right way up ( not right way round ,right way up) if you put blade on a flat surface the leading edge will stand higher than trailing edge
IF you have the KK 2.1.5 never run this on Hobby king firmware its not good and if you do get up you may crash its that bad , get the lead and flash the kk with Steveis 18,1s1pro this is super stable and flys really nice on default setting
While you have the props off just check gyro is right give it 1/2 throttle tilt quad forward the front motors will speed up back will slow down and the same it tilted side ways the high side will slow down ,low side get faster
Another thing check the kk is quad X not quad + in +mode it will try to fly but flip over

Thanks man.

Sorry, I don't understand what you are saying about the props. Here is close up again:

This motor is turning Clockwise. Is that not right? Also front two props turn towards each other and rear two props turn away from each other.

I did your gyro test. And there might be something there. When I go half throttle and tilt the quad forward or sideways, I don't notice any significant change in motor speeds. There is a little bit change in 'motor noise' as I am tilting forward but once I am 'stable' in tilted forward position, they all seem to be turning with same speeds. What could that be?

The board is in the X configuration. I had already checked that.

Appreciate your help.

Hi matePhoto is right , we need to start from the start, unplug all motor but leave M1 in , arm and start quad make sure M1 is spinning and cw , then plug in M2 arm and test M2 will go ccw , do this for all motors one at a time ,till all motors are plugged in , check in the monitor screen that all is zero except AUX if not zero used sub trim to zero them , calibrate ESCs , recalibrate sensors after they should all come back as OK
do you know what firmware it running as you plug in the first 2 seconds will display firmware , if its hobby king i would reflash with steveis code its a lot better , also make sure the board is mounted level , try this and come back to me
I just went back to your first message it sounds like it has HK 1.6 firmware you really need to change this its full of problems
Do you live any where near me i am in luton UK

Thanks man!

I had already done most of what you have listed but I will go back and do it one more time. Trims are zeroed out , ESC's are all calibrated all the same and sensors all come back OK. It may not be obvious from the picture but the board is mounted even too.

FW version as displayed upon start up is 1.6.

I am perplexed as to why I see no noticeable change in motor speeds when I tilt the quad forward or sideways. I was expecting the board will detect that and correct for it.

May be it is the fw after all and I need to re-flash it.

I live in the Minneapolis, USA. It is very very cold here right now so it is impossible for me to go outside and fly the quad anyway.

Thanks

Hi mate thats the hobby king firmware its poo, flash it with steveis 1.8s1pro it should fly on default its nice and stable

Are you using self-level? Are you 100% sure your props turn the right way? I've made this mistake before. I haven't flown with Steveis (however I flashed the quad a month ago :P) but the hk firmware should get you airborne. Poor pid settings can also result in this problems. Also make sure your self-level settings are ok.

I was NOT using self level. Some one else I know, also pointed that out.

Anyway, thanks for the pointers. In the meantime I had returned the FC board and ordered a newer version of the HK 2.1 . This one comes with 1.6v of the FW and with a hard case. I just received it yesterday so I will put it in this weekend and give it another try.
