X580 first build

Hi,
Thought I would sign up in preparation for any issues I may encounter along the way.
I have been flying a hubsan x4 for a while with the kids, but wanted to step up in size and use my gopro with the intention of eventually getting into fpv. I went with the hobbyking X580 frame with a kk2.1 hard case controller for a first time budget build.
Build is pretty much complete just waiting for the last few bits to come before adding the led's for orientation and tidying up the cabling. Initial ground test went well, though the pitch and roll seemed a bit aggressive so will probably need to tone it down a bit; but that can be done when my usbasp lead finally comes so I can update the firmware as it is currently on 1.6.
Can't wait to get this in the air.

Hopefully all goes well from here and the next thing I share is a first flight video without any crashing and burning.

I was really hoping the cable would come today as I have a couple of hours to kill waiting around for the kids tonight, but no such luck. Trying to resist flying it on 1.6 having read peoples opinions of it. Still the velcro and jst splitter came so managed to tidy the build up so it is finished now bar the firmware.

Hi,

It looks very cool. Would you mind sharing specs on your motors/props and the battery?

I have just finished building a very similar platfrom on X580 frame with KK2.1 board from HobbyKing. However, I am having trouble getting it to take off from the ground. Motors spin fine, I have double checked the spin direction and prop installation. The set up moves lot of air but quad simply refuses to lift off of the ground. No spinning, no wobbling just stays stuck to the ground even at full throttle. Which tells me that even with all the RPM's and air moving, I do not have enough 'thrust'.

I am using 10x4,5 props with 800Kv motors. My total quad weight (with battery) ended up being 1.45KG. I currently have a 3cell battery on but beginning to wonder if I need to go with a higher voltage (4S) battery.

Thanks

Thanks and yes sure.
2830-1020kv
11x4.7 props
Turnigy nano-tech 2200mah 3s 25-50c
Total weight 1.187kg

I flashed it today and should have time to get it in the air tomorrow so will let you know how it goes. The data from ecalc suggests 30% throttle to hover which seems like it should be about right from the point it wanted to lift on ground test.

Hi mate what spec is the 800kv motors you have , i run 650kv motors on a 700mm quad but my props are 14x5.5 omg i get loads of lift

Thanks guys. It is 2830-800kv motors.

I finally got response back from the HobbyKink support and my suspicion was right. It is not the motors/prop combination. It is the battery that is my problem.

I was using a 3s battery that gives me only 11.1v total. Which is equivalent to 8880 rpm max. That is enough to blow a lot of air. Not enough to lift 1.5KG. I am going to get a 4S battery now. Plus I may have to go with 11'' props too.

BTW, what kind of battery are you using with your 700mm/650kv/14x5.5 platform?

Thanks mate!

This spreadsheet is great. I just put my data in and got the results! So comprehensive. Best part is that you can look at the formulas and tweak them if you wish.

wish I had this before I ordered the battery. Oh well, I'll just have to get a different battery.
