What transmitter to use

I have a friend who had a MicroMagic, which is a small controllable motorboat, and he still has a transmitter laying around. Is it possible to use this transmitter and what requirements do I need for my quadcopter? I think the transmitter has 4 or 5 channels, but I also have no clue if the receiver will work on the quad or not.
If it doesn't work, what (very) low-budget transmitter/receiver can I get? And do transmitters need a specific type of receivers or are all receivers fine?

You'll need a radio designed for aircraft (not helicopters) with at least 4 but 6 or more channels being preferable. The extra channels allow you to take advantage of the controllers various flight modes and control any accessories like cameras etc. I don't know what your budget is, but the radio sends the signals that will keep your quad from digging holes in the ground so don't bottom feed. Two reasonably priced radios I have heard good reports on are Tactic and Taranis. They come with receivers and can be used with universal receivers like Orange and Lemon. I assume from your question that you will be building your own quad. Correct?

Yes I'm building my own quad, I'm now at the stage where I'm choosing the motors/frame/accu etc. I was wondering if I could use a transmitter which was used for a controllable small motorboat/sailboat, I think I'll look up exactly what kind of transmitter it is, then I'll ask again if it's compatible with a quadcopter or not.
