weird crash

So I had a strange crash the other day. I was about to lose control and crash into something, so did an emergency landing instead - wasn't very high, so the quad landed ok, the right way up, nothing broken, and I killed the throttle and got it into safe mode immediately. It landed in fairly long wet grass.

When I walked over to it, I found that the props were still spinning, at randomly varying speeds, even though it was showing as clearly in safe mode. It couldn't take off since it was getting a little tangled up in the grass. The ESC's were beeping oddly too.

I had a rather hairy moment where i was holding it by the middle with one hand with the props spinning, hoping it wouldn't open up a vein for me or anything whilst trying to disconnect the battery with the other hand, which was not easy. Was either that or hold it till the battery ran out, or ram it face-down into the grass to kill it which obviously I didn't want to do. I did eventually manage to get the battery disconnected.

On taking it back to the bench with the props off and repowering it, the motors weren't spinning any more, but there was lots of odd beeping still, and I couldn't get the motors to spin up. I found that there was a soggy bit of petal from one of the weeds it landed in lying on the FCB so removed that. Finally, recalibrated the ESC's again and that fixed it, and it's been flying fine ever since.

Has anyone else had anything like this ? I'm guessing that the bit of petal on the board short-circuited something which then crashed the program currently running in the FCB and decalibrated the ESC's

It's a KK2.1.5 board which I've mounted inside the protective antistatic foam box it came in to protect it and the connectors in crashes. EMAX Simon Series 25A ESC's

Hi mate the leaf made it factory reset, so it will be like a new board , what firmware are you running? , steveis1.8s1pro is super stable and really nice to fly on

ahh that makes sense, I guess I should go through all the settings and calibrations again then. I was thinking about sticking some clear plastic or something over the top of the board so that stuff can't get in in future, but I'd have to leave a gap to get to the buttons I guess.

Haven't looked at firmware yet, and have been using it as is out of the box, but I was going to have a look. I think I need some firmware uploader gizmo first, don't I ?

You could get some spray on clear coat, just make sure to mask off the LCD screen and the tops of the buttons.

firmware uploader gizmo
:)

.

gizmo duly ordered - had to find a UK equivalent, hopefully this one works.

Does anyone know of any other software that can be used on the PC for the flashing ? I was playing with the KKMulticopter Flashtool last night but couldn't get it working with Java on my Windows 7 laptop last night. Mind you, I'll be using an old XP machine to actually do the flashing.

As an aside, I had a few rare occasions (3-4 times in about 5 hours of flying) where very briefly one of the motors would stop spinning for a moment. If it's high enough, then the self-level can sometimes catch it, but I've had it flip over and land on the floor too - it's annoying enough when I break a prop when I crash it, but doubly annoying when it's not my fault !

Would I be right in assuming that this will be fixed once I've flashed the firmware and am using my new txrx (Flysky 6CH) that I've got on order, or is there something else going on ? All the connections are sound, of course.

I am currently waiting for my USB asp cable my self, so am running stock firmware. I don't have this problem. There could be other varibles that you have to make the KK2 do this, or it could be unrelated the the KK. Is it always the same motor?

Next time (if) it happens mark the motor/arm that dipped. Then you will be able to tell if it happens again.

Also you may need to calibrate the ESCs, (I don't necessarily think that this is the problem).

Hi mate once you reflash your need to set up again but if you use Steveis1.8s1pro it flys well on the default setting ( there is a steveis1.9 pro but this is for the acro board) , self level is so much better too , I dont know why the software is not working on the PC mine is a 64 bit windows 7 and runs spot on

got the Flashtool software working btw. Seems the Java autoinstall installed the wrong bit version, so I had to do it manually, choosing Windows Offline (64 bit) from here

Well done so your ready to go , dont save the flash file do it on line right on to the KK some have said it can take 15 mins to flash , I never found that 50 seconds is more like it

for anyone flashing, always try to flash offline if you can. If something happens to your network connection during the process you are going to either getting a new device, or doing some soldering. Because interrupting the process will brick the chip you are flashing.

Hi George, there has been some problems when saving files to flash the KK thats why its recommended to flash direct to KK from the internet files of multirotor flash tool , I have done it many times and never had a problem

my quad's actually in Spain and I don't have internet connectivity there, so will be taking everything I need out on a memory stick - USBASP driver, flashtool, java updates, firmware zips etc.

If it goes wrong, does the factory reset restore the original firmware, or do I just have to keep trying ?
