Turning existing Syma x8 into custom build

I bought a syma x8g from cash convertors the othr day for a cheap price (I wanted to learn how to fly a drone and to see if it is a hobby i'd like o take up.

My original idea was to build my own (I have a 3D Printer) so I was wondering, could I take apart the syma and attach it to a new, lighter body that is 3D Printed?

Would there be problems if the propellers were in a diferent position (i.e. I made a rectangle shaped quad instead of the X shape) or if they were futher apart (or even closer)?

As long as the symmetry is OK then yes.
I did it with 2 toy quads I got.
Just opened it up @ transplanted it onto another frame in one. I had a jjrc like your syma & put it on 80mm 3D printed frame. It was zippy & someone offered me £80 for a £30 drone. I had broken & got some flight time from it.

So by symetry do you mean it has to be an X shape the same size? or could I transfer it to a H frame for a more "racing drone" feel?
