Yes, I know that the best way to learn is to just "do it". However, it would be nice if there were a generic app for hobbyists, that does not have a name-brand drone. I have seen the Dji app, but they want you to only use their models.
 
Hi spektrum does a flight sim which does drones too it can come with a dx6i transmitter which you can use later when you build your own drone
