The new guy on the block

Greetings ladies and gentlemen,

My name is Jeff, and I am just starting out in the drone world. I was given an early Christmas gift by my loving wife, in the form of a Syma X5SW quadcopter, and has given me a brand new hobby, and believe me, I needed one.

I have kept my flying around my house so far, but a plan for a flight tomorrow at a local aero field is in the works. I'm have about 20 hours so far on the bird, and none of that though in FPV. I am not 100% on it as of yet.

This new hobby is great for me, because I am disabled. I served in the USMC from 08'-12' and NCNG from 12'-14', and in 2011 broke my back and tore my rotator cuff in my left arm, and its been a struggle since and recently has really been keeping me down. This drone provides me the sense of mobility that I am limited to currently.

I do wish to do some mods to it. I want to do the 800m battery pack upgrade, the tri-blade props, and possibly removal of all the non essentials. I have seen one video of an extreme of even removing the LED's, and another where holes where drilled.

My goal would have to be to take this drone activity to both paths I see myself interested in. Search and Rescue operations, and drone racing. I believe that this X5SW has given me the base to use to get the basics down for both. The plan is to acquire a DJI Mavic and use that for aerial photo's and ops, and eventually join a league or create a local one.

Until next time,

JLF

Well first off I'd like to say thank you for your service. My advice would be to practice with that drone, get comfortable with it and learn more about the hobby until you can build your own purpose built drone where you can get into first person view flying(fpv) which gives you a great sense of mobility, although difficult. I would start there and see how you feel about everything else once you've got some experience. Good luck with it and let us know about your progress

I'm new here too! I'm also really excited to give it a shot, I've had my eye on Quads for the longest time and I just never decided to buy one. I have an MJX X400W on the way, so I believe we have pretty similar setups. I also really enjoy modding, so let me know if you discover anything!

Thank you for your service indeed!

Glad to hear you've found something that you really like. Hell, start a drone racing league in your neighborhood. Why not?

:D
