Questions about wind

Being a new pilot I took my HS710 out for its first test flight. The purpose of this flight was to understand the controls and get used to how it operates before I do a real flight. So my expectations were only to fly roughly 2-5 meters off the ground and keep it close to grass so it does not get damaged from falls. However this did not go planned whatsoever.

I started to notice after the first take-off that the drone was wobbling a little and started to toilet bowl only a foot or two off the ground. So me being inexperienced I did not realize that the 35-40MPH winds might actually be a issue with a drone this size.

Long story short, I ended up hitting a rock on the ground and the drone flew up about 60-100 feet without me controlling it. Then I attempted to use the left stick to bring it down but no luck. So then I clicked the RTH button and finally it responded but was super slow.

My question is, when flying a smaller drone of that size. What are the most ideal wind speeds to get a more natural feeling flight? I have seen multiple answers on google for example 10-15MPH, 5-25MPH, etc. However the general consensus I noticed was basically to not go over 25-30MPH wind speeds. I am just wanting to find the ideal speed so I can actually enjoy flight and take some pictures.

First and foremost, I am not proclaiming to be an expert drone pilot. I have only 3 + years experience and strictly on toy drones.
My comments below are strictly personal experience on the toy drones I possess.

RE: What are the most ideal wind speeds to get a more natural feeling flight?
My own preference on maximum wind speed : under 15 mph.
Your HS 710 is a GPS plus Optical Flow Positioning drone. You can take it up to air higher than 100ft no problem It can handle some wind guts. But not 35-40 mph. No toy drone can handle that kind of guts.

RE: Then I attempted to use the left stick to bring it down but no luck.
Make sure you have the drone and controller connected. They call it "bind". If they are bound, you should be able to use the left stick to bring it down. I don't understand why you could not.
Have you flown it again after this incident, and if "yes", did the left stick work correctly?

RE: using the RTH
When RTH is enabled, the drone will go up in the air to a certain height (altitude), then it will attempt to fly to and above the spot it has been launched. Then slowly it will descend. Yes, it will happen slowly. Mind you, no toy drones that I know of are capable to land "bullseye" on the exact spot it they were launched. "Close-by" is the best you can expect.

Using the left stick while losing control did not work, but worked fine after I took it inside where it was less windy. I actually heard the HS 710 is pretty good to fly inside without GPS active just to keep it in eyesight.

I now understand the RTH system thank you. I read a about it in the manual but I did not know how slow it actually was. I have watched some videos of people pushing it to its limits with distance and observed in their videos the drone return relatively fast. I did see one video where one guy was actually having issues getting it down. It returned to the location it took off but never landed. So I wonder if I could just RTH back to line of sight if needed and manually land from here on out.

Press the RTH button again to exit RTH function.

Refer to your user manual? I found that answer from your HS710 manual on line.

Update : June 17th, 7:15 pm EST. Wind at 18 mph.
I took out my toy drone XK X-300 which does not have GPS but does have Optical Flow Positioning feature.
I brought it up to 200 feet without a glitch.

Just my thoughts are 6-7 mph and down.If nothing else ,a good wind
will give your mind and your fingers a work out. Notice I mentioned fingers, --- I'm, a pincher.

another thought here also. When you use rth , you can stop at any point in the return by repressing the rth button. Then you can fly manually with your sticks . Just about every function on your quad will work the same way. In other words press to select , press again to un select. Also ,another thought , if you have a high and low speed setting. If you were in low speed mode the quad will be very slow to respond to any command except up and down. For those that don't know, rth should bet set to get high enough to miss any obstructions , like trees . That way it will cut a straight line from where its at to you , then it will come down and land. For beginers low speed is nice, it will give you time to think, instead of just smashing itself to pieces. Also better for making vids.beginners need to think, when they turn the quad and fly at themselves, All the commands are bass ackwads.
