Problems with Ares Ethos HD

Was flying early yesterday evening, making video over my house. Out of the blue, the ethos hd climbed and departed on its own to the east. I have been unable to recover the quad copter as it was a fresh battery and it took off on its own toward a dense woods. Any ideas on how this happens?
 
Mine flew away once, found it 2 1/2 blocks away. Now my name and phone number is on it. In my case I'm guessing my inexperience at far/high altitude and maybe the range is not as great compared to Hobby Grade radios.
