Planning Stage

Hi Fellows
I've never seen a quad in person. Though I was working with computers in the 70s.
I'm starting a plan to build a FPV. Since i'm 57 yo I'm thinking of skipping the training wheels. I've watched about a hundred youtubes and other vids The question I have at this time is about range and cost. The kind of range I'm shooting for is 3kms.
I'm looking for 15-20min, mostly 20 minutes flying time.
So how much range can I get for $1000 building myself? And how much for $2000?
I like the looks of the Taranis X9D. Can it handle 3kms and what else is needed.
Are there some threads anyone could direct me to that could. I'm building this for security on my property. I can get by with 2kms and 10 min but I want to consider all options. I'm a fast learner. Everyone is appreciated. Thanks for your input.

Hi mate I know its fun to build your own , but for that price the DJI Phantom will do every thing you want , has flight time of about 25 mins is very easy to fly once you know how all the systems work like GPS return home , If you really want to build one then go for the DJI flame wheel with the full naza M and GPS
As for range 3km will need a booster station i will give you a link for rcmodel reviews Bruce has done loads of videos on FPV long range , he even has one on making an base station that fits in a back pack so you can move around more easy , He has 100s of videos so look through them on his channel most fpv is Planes but will work on quads , He has only just start to really get into quads so there will be more to come from Bruce on FPV quads

Thank you . I did more study on youtube and found more indepth data about range and components. This one for instance.

ATG Reptile quad, Sunnysky 2218 980K,10x3 carbon t motor props, hobbyking 30 amp esc, naza m conrtoller, EZUHF LRS, GOPRO3, Video TX 1.3mhz 1000 watt, everything powered from 8000 mah 3s battery.
This was very impressive and informative, though there was nothing about the transmitter.
I've since decided to consider the ATG TT-X4-16 Reptile and Tarot Ironman 650 frames.
I'll also consider the DJI Phantom 2 Vision.
Bruce Simmons produces excellent presentations I've seen many, some twice but not the one you suggested. I'm good to go now with the info I have to get it started.
Thanks

Hi mate glad it helped , if it was me I would just make sure what ever the frame was the FCB was the DJI Naza M , most full range transmitter like spektrum and futaba will do 2km easy , a lot depends on if there are building to block out signals , here is a video of how good the nazaM is its the Phantom but the fcb is the naza m its says gone in 45 secs but it comes back Well it is the naza m , also Bruce did a phantom tear down

What receiver for the Taranis X9D would you suggest for say up to 5kms?
The Frsky L9R Long Range Receiver looks like the real deal.
Are there better antennas That boost the Taranis x9d
Would the FrSky XJT - JR/Graupner Type 16ch Duplex Transmitter Telemetry Module plus the FrSKY X8R Receiver gain the range I'm looking for?
