Part selection

You can decide on the props, but as a rule of thumb, 8 inches will be a little more agile and 10 inches will be a little more stable.

You don't have to buy DJI parts. If you're willing to wait a week or two for shipping, HobbyKing & RC Timer have good prices on parts. Hobbyking parts have a lot of ratings, so you should be able to gauge quality that way. Hobbyking even has warehouses in multiple regions, so you can select the warehouse you want to shop from prior to selecting your parts to see the availability of what will ship from nearby. Or you can always use Ebay.

It's a good idea to select that close warehouse on Hobbyking, because shipping out of Hong Kong is RUDE! I shopped the other day and figured I'd go ahead and buy a frame. The shipping was going to be half the cost of the frame I was looking at! I like their folding Alien 560 frame, but I'll get it locally or go with something else.

Agreed! Unless I absolutely need something that's only in the Hong Kong warehouse, or I'm ordering all very small stuff (connectors and whatnot), I will always do what I can to choose products that are available in the USA warehouse. The price difference between the HK and local warehouses is usually very small, but shipping is much quicker and much better locally. RC Timer is different though. They offer free shipping on a lot of products from Hong Kong and it's usually pretty fast. They also just opened a US distributor, but the prices are way higher than their main store.
