Newbie planning build... a few questions...

Because I still haven't ever flown a multicopter so I dunno what I'm doing. Maybe flips and all that control will make my thumbs pop off and I'll just have to stick to FPV...no point in spending an extra $75 on a controller in that case.

yep I'm currently in Pennsylvania.

I think I've settled on the 980kv. Now to figure out if the higher end V series SunnySky motor is worth the extra $4/motor over the mid level X series

hahaha! Just to throw another into the mix, I have the 910 Kv NTM 3536 PropDrive motors, which have pretty good reviews, seem quite robust and proved able to withstand my clumsiness so far, including a little smoke! So, altho, I only ever crashed them, or burned them, I seem to be able to offer, a recommendation, with the reservation that further long term testing requited... I'm sure they have a 980 version

I'm gonna stick to the sunnysky 2212. It's everything I see when I look around. It's gotta be good.

So yet another dilemma, do I really need 30A ESC's for something that will only ever pull maybe 18.5A on a 4S pack and no more than 15A on a 3S.

Good question... I got 30a esc's, but my motors may pull more current... If I remember correctly, they're 20/25A

I orginally bought a 4x20a integrated ESC unit, because it's the same footprint as controller and would be centrally installed, before I decided to go for low Kv motors after further research about heavy lifts... I have that in my 3 month old box of RC bits which is now full of all sorts of stuff I've collected the last 3 months... I've not even flown properly yet...HA!!!

I decided it must be better to be safe, than to have the thing fall from god knows what height with blown ESC's

You make a good point. 30A it is then at a cost of an extra 18g of weight. I think I'm nearing my final list of parts: http://goo.gl/f2y2OT Just the Tx and battery to finalize I believe.
Where would I go to find someone that really knows this stuff well to review my list?

TBH... I have no idea! This forum... make a post and let people comment...

I came across a chap yesterday, on facebook, he calls himself "that hpi guy". He is local to me in UK, but he may be a good source... I am hoping to meet up with him next time he goes flying at the local beach. I may even have mine running by then, and crashing into sand sounds quite appealing!

I need a little guidance with my quad. I have a home built unit where I followed Mike Simpson's series "Kronos Copter" in Servo magazine. I installed the Naza M V2 flight controller with GPS. I am having a hard time getting in the air. First problem is when it hovers it shakes. It is like if you spin a coin on a tabletop and the coin starts to slow down and wobble before it stops. What mode do I take off in Attitude or Attitude GPS. What do the terms yaw, roll and pitch mean. which is turning? Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU, MRLICH

Well I can't tell you about your flight controller but I can give you a bit of insight. First of all, for yaw/pitch/roll, imagine a plane. Pitch is moving the nose up or down. Roll is what it means, roll side to side like you would tell a dog to 'roll over.' Yaw is turning the plane without pitching or rolling. Yaw is typically controlled with the rudder. In a quad, these terms are somewhat relative since there is no defined front. The one term, yaw, has more meaning than anything. Since a quad has two rotors spinning one way and two spinning the opposite way, in order to turn/yaw/pirouette, it increases the speed of two spinning the direction of desired yaw, and decreases the other two to maintain the same altitude.

As for your flight issues, what ESC's are you using. It may be a result of slow ESC response but that's unlikely...

yourameh, thanks very much for that explanation. That put it straight for me and I now understand the terms. I am using the exact same esc's that Mike used in his article. My main problem is that I am new, once it gets in the air I get nervous and forget all. I am now in the process of rebuilding the quad and then I will give it another try. Once again, thanks for the help. MRLICH
