Newbie, fast learner. How does flying quads compare to RC helicopters?

I should consider starting with..?

25 miles? You might better to do a plane, at range they have a lot better battery life and if you have a problem they are a lot less likely to go down 20 miles from you in a forest that you don't recognize hahaha. What ever you decide to do, it is possible with an anteana tracker system, but the hard part is the battery life.

My dad has been flying planes for years. He only does gas motors though and typically only 1-2 miles max. In fact, most of his big ones are from the 1990's and have cable controls. To me that is more like flying a kite that sounds like a weed eater lol.

Im not sure ive seen a true Hobby grade geared motor set up but ,it could be possible.

I must applaud how you wish to learn before jumping in to the expensive and dangerous hobby level of quads however im not so sure you will get bored as easily with a toy quad as you might think.

Looking forward to seeing the X8C when you get it..This is one model seriously on my list of quads to own.

To maintain as long of flight times as possible and as little strain as possible to the motors, i plan to use a simple Mini FPV system to minimize weight...Check out the EACHINE TL 700 Fpv system...you wont find a better one for the price anywhere..$30.00 or less for it all...Just saying...Get you a monitor or compatible goggles and youre good to go.

Dreams and plans for those dreams are a good thing! Sounds like you have both. When you start building you'll catch the disease and then it's all over. Hopefully your family will understand............ Hahaha!!

That's awesome, where do you recommend to buy that (and other parts for that matter)? I ordered from Gearbest and they seem slooow at processing on the x8c.

Im still waiting for a Bayang X9 from them..ordered it the tenth and paid for tracking and still have no progress other than processed.

Eachine can be purchased almost anyplace..just type in Eachine TL 700 FPV and you will get results..Check out youtube videos as well on them.

Haha, it's going to be tough sledding. My wife just couldn't understand why on earth I wanted to spend $100 on "a toy!? And it's not even for the kids, it's for you?!" Of course the kids are a little young for it now (ages 2 and 4), but I'm sure they will love these things when they get older.

Oh one note on the eachine kit...get the 110 degree view kit..dont get the wide 140 degree or whatever it is..its been said it gives a more distorted view...110 looks pretty good.

Okay, the x8c has arrived and the cx-10 still has not. I've got the x8 put together and charging. I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve waiting for this battery to charge lol. I was hoping the cx-10 would arrive on time and well before the x8 so I could have a chance to practice with the little guy first, but the x8 showing up a week early is a nice surprise. I put the prop guards on for now to be safer and I'm just going to try some low flying to get used to it until I get comfortable. I'll try to get you guys some pics and/or video if you want. Thanks again for all the advice going into this.

I would suggest learning to hover as the first level...You may find it wants to drift left or right or maybe travel backwards or forwards...The object here is to keep it withing a small confine...Of course adjust trims as needed to get it as stable as possible first then you will have to actually fly to take care of the rest.

Congrats on your quads and have fun.

Good advice, thanks!

One more tip..if you feel you are going to crash or see it happening always remember to cut throttle asap just b4 it hits ground, as this can save your props and motors in most cases and also help with not burning up your flight board.

Well it took over 6 hours to charge so I finally flew it today. I also got the CX-10 today and crashed it all over the house. That thing is harder for me to control than the x8 even on beginner mode. I see what you mean Mike about how crazy fast it is in expert. After all the crashes one of the back motors is a little stiff now. Anyway, here's video from my first flight with the x8. I obviously need to learn how to pan around slower and I need to balance the props and make some mods to reduce jello. I haven't decided what better cam I'm going to buy yet so I'll just use this one for now.

Get a real battery charger like the Imax B6 or a thunder AC6 from hobbypartz.com..You can charge in like an hour with a real charger...I dont trust those chargers that come with the quads at all..most do more harm than good and take forever to charge.

Hahaha on the CX10...its a little speed demon...there are quite a few models people think are beginners models but they arent really..Another one is the Eachine or JJRC H8 mini models...These little cheap quads are a handful to handle..Super fast yaw rates and speed make them not so user friendly for beginners...Another one is the JunChen 3015.

Most of your vibrations are coming from the mounting of the camera..the props should be pretty well balanced.

Most detach the camera and find a better way to mount it with some sort of vibration dampening..Alot tend to use foam as a damper...Some even make custom gimbals using parts from a hardware store.

You should have a high and low rate..im not sure if yaw is changed or not when switching but if you are going to be up high its best to be in high rate as wind can show its head at anytime and you need to be in high to fight it.

I'll be ordering one of those chargers today. I see what you mean about fighting the wind in low rate. You really cannot tell in the video, but I switched to high rate while I was up there because it was drifting and didn't want to come back when I tried in low rate. The yaw seems to be the same either way. I just need to be easier on the controls. I noticed earlier when I was playing with the yaw I was moving the throttle too by mistake.

I put the props on a balancer and they are not off bad, but not completely balanced so I need so I sanded a swipe or two off the heavy sides and now they are perfect. I've seen so many ways people reduce the jello on these cams. I'm probably going to take it out of the case as many have shown inside the case is the cam in another case which is the x5 2.0mp cam then work on mounting that maybe using foam, or even try something similar to the credit card mount.

Now that I've spent most of my day playing with this thing, I got to get some work done lol.

Sounds like you have it pretty much worked out...Should be alot of fun once you get the bugs worked out...Im going to work in about 20 minutes myself hahaha....sigh.

I see now even though I did a ton of research, I still have a lot to learn. I think I've been bit by the bug already because I am already eyeballing my next quad (Flying 3D X8) and I don't even know how to fly these effectively yet lol. I'm going to wait for sure, but I can't help but look at it. Have a good evening at work.
