Newb > Intermediate. Which way?

Hi guys,

Completely bitten by the quad bug. I've had my little Hubsan x4 for a year now and I love it. I've bought the accesories, got new batteries and even stripped down a £3 keycam and attatched it, etc etc. All been great fun.

I'm just thinking now with Christmas coming up, and hopefully finding Santa in a generous mood, where to go next? Ideally I'd like a more advanced quad preferably with a reasonably good camera built in. I'm not after anything professional (down to a lack of cash more than anything), but what would be a good next step for me to take?
 
Hey nick, yup I am in the same exact position u are in. So far my plan is going to go buy a 6 to 9 channel remote, hopefully a 9 channel, if I can afford it. You can bind multiple copiers, choppers, airplanes, so I would assume this is the most important piece of equipment. Then it's preference on what u like, I'm looking at one of these from armattan, frames are carbon fiber, and only $200 to $300, depending on what u like. It would come with either kk2 board or multi wii, so later u can upgrade it to a naza.

I'm loving my Taranis. Lots of receiver choices with the stock radio, plus you can buy an Orange module to easily add DSM2 which is common with a lot of RTF models. You have telemetry options, and an inexpensive S-BUS decoder adds four more channels for a total of 12. You can do 16 channels on one model, store multiple models and manage configurations on a PC. Rather than waste $$ on a Turnigy 9x, get a Taranis.
 
No idea if you've made the purchase yet, but I've got a Spektrum DX6i (6 channels) and it does me nicely for my heli's, I'm about to start on building my first quad and it looks like the DX6i will do the job nicely.

You can pick them up second-hand on eBay for between £50 and £70 and the really nice thing is that they will work with the OrangeRX Receivers that HobbyKing and others (including Amazon and eBay) are selling for under £15!

There is also an OrangeRX Transmitter available which is basically a clone of the DX6i, but I've heard good things about it.

You don't get any built-in telemetry with the 6i however in my case that's not a problem as the board that's been suggested for my quad won't send data back anyway! (I'll address this with a better board later on once I've crashed this cheaper one a few times!)

The DX6i will store up to 10 Planes/Helis so it should keep you going for some time! :)
 
Hi Nick , there are a few ways to go buy a 450 RTF quad with transmitter will be about £150 all in but thats from china so it about 4 weeks wait max , or build your own if it just going to be a fun flier,then Hobby King do a flame wheel frame for £9 so get 2 this will give you spare arms and base, if you dont mind the colour the clone of the DX6i will cost £41 approx ,kk2.1.5 £16 this will fly stable can link a camera gimbal or fly acro , 1000kv motors props also 4x esc or a Q brain , Now what this will do is fly well give you years of fun and when your ready and have some spare cash get bigger frame and go into FPV ( HK do an plug and play kit for FPV for £62 that everything you need ) or get a 250 mini quad and do some quad racing using FPV ( OMG that is so much fast fun)
If you want to go the build route i dont mind helping with what parts to get ,where to get them and setting up
