New Battery Recommendations

Hello everyone,

I have been flying really hard the past couple of days as the Michigan snows have cleared out. Recently, I was flying over a parking lot doing flips and such until a propeller exploded in mid air, causing the quad to take a tumble. It landed right on the battery and arm. Arm is replaced, but now the battery is in bad shape (Lumenier 1800mAh 4s 75C). It was in rough shape before (in terms of scratches, not puffing) but now a volt meter reads 12v on a 4s. Only 3 out of the 4 cells read voltage. I doubt the 4th cell has actually discharged to 0, as there is no puffing, so I assume it is a bad cable somewhere in the lipo. If anyone knows a fix to this (hopefully without turning it into a 3s, I'm all ears).

Bracing for the worst, however, I am looking into a new battery. I have heard lots of brands other than Lumenier, such as tattu, nanotech, zippy, etc.
I am on a bit of a budget, and was looking at the nanotechs here but have heard some bad things about them, that they are cheaply made, wires fragile, heat up quickly, drop off voltage, and overall just don't last very long. Do these claims have any merit? If so, can anyone suggest another good brand on a budget? Or should I just get another Lumenier?

Thanks in advance,

PS: is 1800mah the way to go? I would like the flight time, but also know that 1300 would be less sluggish. I do racing and freestyle, but am not hardcore and like the extra flight time

Im not really a nano tech fan of any kind..not sure how they are built today but not long ago they couldnt perform better than no name stock brand batteries in a small helicopter.

Hyperion are very high quality batteries and i would look into those as a possible option...When i use lipo for rc cars ive always had very good performance and reliabilty using GensAce batteries which arent over priced..not sure what they have in an 1300 to 1800mah 3s model but, if they have one i would consider them.

Thanks for your reply,

The GensAce batteries are really good from what I hear, the tattus are good in the multirotor field. But they are much more expensive than the nanotechs, and even the lumemiers. Hyperion batteries seem to be in the same price range as the Lumemiers, how do they compare? Are there any good lipos that are less than that of lumeniers?

Its unfortunate you cant have the lighter weight of a 1300mah with the capacity of an 1800..I can only suggest one of each battery for the task you are wanting at the time...Maybe compromise with a 1500 or 1600mah ?

Gens ace is a company or the battery ive had the most experience with and im not familiar with Lumimiers.

Thanks for the reply,

Is it possible to parallel charge a 1300 with an 1800? I know you can parallel charge with two different capacities, but that far apart? I really appreciate the help you've given, but is there anyone else out there with experience comparing turnigy nanotechs and other brands?

Thanks,

I never parallel charge batteries so i cant answer that.

Again, Turnigy nano tech batteries are not a brand i personally put my trust in.

Yeah, that's the opinion of many people from reviews I've read, figured that it's probably better to stay clear of them, but some people say they are good at the sizes I'm looking for, so I was a little confused.

Its quite possible....i know the nano tech has a popular 750mah 1s battery people like to use in the syma x5c model..Unfortunately i wont be trying those to find out.

Best of luck to you finding the right battery.

Awesome, I'll do that, 180o for slow longer flights, 1300 for fast paced racing. :) Any recommendations for brands?

Here's a flite test review of the nano tech batteries, I have two 1300 45-90c in the mail right now

Thanks for the reply,

I watched that video, (big FT fan) and was pretty impressed, however, they are sponsored by Hobby King. FT are usually pretty trustworthy, but I don't know. Also, it seems like they were testing the pack on the first few cycles. How do they hold up over time?

Thanks,

I guess time will tell for me, but the fact that it didn't puff after they dropped it to almost under 8v leads me to believe that they will hold up pretty well

Sounds really good. I think I'll pick up some nano-techs. Are there any other brands I should consider?

Thanks for the reply,

I'll check it out, right now I have to nanotechs 1800 4s on the way. But now a different problem, my IMAX B6 charger balance in inaccurate. I can't calibrate as the menu is not there. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

PS, I'm not sure if changing the subject like that is against the rules, if I need to make a different thread, let me know.
