Need help please - son crashed his ZMR250 now - motor problem

Hi All,

This is my first post here so please be gentle.
At the weekend I took my son flying with his ZMR250 self build, which has a naze 32 rev 6 full flight controller, a 20A all in one ESC (i know - horrible, but wanted his first build to be fairly simple for him), Matek PDB, and racerstar motors (cheap to see if he likes the hobby). He was using a 75C 1300maH LiPo and his normal Taransi x9D plus controller.

I am probably giving too much information, but wanted to try and list everything so that the answer would be direct.

So, he crashed it, but before that he throttled from ground to full in under a second (not sure if this caused a problem - just letting you know), then he levelled out, flew around for a short time, and then crashed into the ground.

Once on the ground he made safe and shouted me. I came over and played with the drone, but couldnt get all the motors to start at the same time. Two motors were starting but the other two not.

Once home I loaded cleanflight and on the motor tab, two motors started around 1147, one motor at 1400 or something and the other didnt start at all.

Does anyone know what he has done? Has he burnt the ESC? or does it need re calibrating or something?

Really appreciate all your help - I dont really know where to start, but he loves drones and want to get him flying again as soon as possible.

I would take the two duds off & test them on there own. Or if not got spares then swap motor ports. If 1&2 don't work then try them on 3&4.
If nothing works then try a working motor on a duff esc & if still just keep going through. Just deduct what's not working. I have a servo tester so I can just put signal & ground on that & plug the lipo in. Did you try a calibration in motors tab & gyro recalibration.
Was the ground wet. Do the bells spin freely by hand.

The drone is physically fine, slight scratches to the props, but nothing really that bad (apart from the motor problem).
I did the initial setup in CF and everything has worked the last two times we have flown the drone.
The ground was very dry (due to the unusually high temperatures in UK at the moment - great for flying)

I will go through the motors one by one and change their position. I am guessing that if the motors act the same in the same locations, then the motors are ok, and the ESC either needs replacing or calibrating - thanks for the suggestions. The motors spin freely by hand.We already calibrated the accelerometers / compass and everything that was easy, but within the motors tab, one motor wouldn't spin and the opposite motor only started spinning at really high throttle input.

You got it, without a servo tester it's a pain but the only way to deduct each one. Jus swap a working motor if that don't work try a working esc it's a pain but you should only have to dismantle 2 arms to get a result. A working & non working, OK maybe a third. But you got the picture.

Servo tester are buttons, £4 on ebay.
Save you hours of trouble.
I mainly use it to test stuff before use or if going in a draw. If not I can send it back.

Many thanks - I have a servo tester, so I could just "jump" this onto the motor connectors and see what happens -

will try and let everyone know - and thanks again for all your help.

Hi All,

Just a quick update, and to say thanks for the help offered on here. The problem was the calibration of the ESCs through the flight controller. The tip about the servo tester was a great help, and saved loads of time. My son is now back flying and very happy...
