Need help on Experimental Quadrotor

Maybe, depends if they are more weight than they help. They could be made out of foam reasonably light.
 
The link you sent stated that they(combined) could weigh as much as the quad and still provide a substantial benefit. Just don't fly in the wind....:)
 
Bummer..... I have accumulated enough info now to determine that this project is a dead end as far as improving on the standard quadcopter design. It would be a novelty only. Nuts. It looked so cool! The final determination of the research project was that it did increase flight times and lifting ability. The problem came with adding payload. The only practical mounting spot was under the bottom plate. Combined with the fixed pitch large main rotor, once you added extended landing gear and the additional payload weight (camera,etc.) that low it created a pendulum effect that made maneuvering touchy. Any abrupt change in direction would start an oscillation that was difficult to get back under control. Oh well........:(

That could be fixed maybe by extending the arms out or raising the middle motors. But too bad it would not work well in it's present state.
 
Yeah. It kinda got me excited about something a bit different. A derivative of it could probably be made to work but the additional complexity of using more motors and a variable pitch main rotor likely wouldn't be worth it. At least not to me. Sounds like that would be more up your alley! :)

Haha, CP is too costly for me, I'd do it more like a gyro copter with two apposing props stacked. Just gotta get time, hopefully time is coming soon haha.
 
Yeah. You've had quite the schedule. I have a question for you. I was talking to a friend about using 2 lipo's wired in parallel on a quad. I said one large battery is better or if using 2 batteries have each one power 2 motors. My reasoning is that manufacturing and charging/balance differences in the 2 batteries can cause some problems when hooked up in parallel. It would be like they were sorta fighting each other and that could damage one or both of them. At the least it could shorten the life of the batteries. He says BS. What say you?

Depends, if they are each powering two different ESCs then two of your ESCs may go into LVC before the other two and cause a crash. So it would be better to use a parallel connector than each to power two sets of ESCs. If they are wired in parallel and one had higher internal resistance you could deplete one battery before the other and ruin the depleted one. It could cause a problem but the problem is unlikely as one battery will charge the other.

If you are not doing long range I suggest having multiple smaller batteries and swapping them out on the ground that way your not carrying all of that capasity. I personally like to use the multistar 5200mAh.


On a side note remember that your capasity is doubled, but you are limited to current rate of the lowest C rated battery.
 
Thanks. You answered most of my questions. I still believe one 10000mah battery is better than 2 5000mah batteries. I'm not sure I get what you mean by "multiple smaller batteries". I understand what you explained about the parallel batteries. I had not thought about the LVC possibility. You COULD solve that by an alarm for each battery, but that hardly seems worth it. I guess I owe my buddy a beer.......

Haha, there is some merit to what you are saying but it is unlikely as the two batteries will recharge each other.


I meant instead of 10000 mAh battery it is better to have two 5Ah batteries and swap one out with the other. That way your only carrying part of the weight.
 
Ahhhh .... Now I get what you mean! Although that does shorten the flight time. It does give you a nice break by having to land and change the batteries. Sometimes it gets a little tiring after 15-20 minutes of concentrating on not making a hole in the ground.......:p
