Need help on building a quad

Pork pie, All the way to this sshhiit hole for a pork pie. I would have thrown it back @ him. Yeah down south, them southern fairies eat all weird stuff
jellied eels, tripe which is possibly what that pie was. Lard is pure fat what you cook chips in, aah the good old days home cooked mums chips. Big fat fries to you yanks.

That setup he intends to buy will be the buzz. & he can just start on 2S & build up.
If you get a BNF & you bust it you still gotta learn how to fix it. Source reliable parts yo self. & unless you strapped buy extras so you got em in. Like a spare motor or 2 cam or vtx.

LOL - I had a lot of nicer meals, but we were in a hurry to get to Salisbury (where his family lived) and drink very heavily until we had to report at the customer's office after the weekend.

Yeah I agree on the fixing part, I still may end up building the first one. Thanks for the pointers on spares. Will definitely take that into account. Sadly, the missus tells me she is getting a new bicycle before I get a new quad - so I have a bit of time to think and plan. She didn't specifically mention not getting a controller, so I may be able to sneak that in ahead of time :D

As for build size, @Gyro Doctor , what kind of build do you then suggest?

Also, I have an Teleporter V5 :confused:. Not the best, planning to upgrade. (sticking to 5.8 for now. Also planning to get a HAM radio licence )

Just to weigh in on the other side, the great thing about micros is that the inevitable crashes and breaks are cheaper to repair. I'm enjoying the convo a lot. Moz, as a closet anglophile, I gotta love the regional smack-talking. Guess some things are the same everywhere!

I'm no expert, but Painless360's build videos on youtube are what got me interested in building one. He does a great job explaining things and you will learn a lot. He has at least four different build series (I think two are meant for beginners). Here's the first one in the first series:


I also like the way this guy builds too (DroneMesh):


Now you may want better or more current parts - I'll leave that to the true experts around here to guide you in that department. I think if you watch one of the full build series - you will have a MUCH better understanding of what's going on during a build - be forewarned that it's an 6+ hour time investment to go through the whole series - but IMO very worth it.

I guess you can count me as one, too. It took me a bit to get used to the British sense of humor and your (not freezing cold) beer, but became a huge fan of both after some exposure.

No worries. And thanks for the antenna links - another topic I need to learn more about.

Back to builds and parts....I'm also a big fan of Mr. Steele. He puts all the parts he uses in the description of most or all of his videos. He also has a build video that shows how to build something very similar to what he flies a lot (Alien I think?) that you can poke around for on his channel - but he does them a lot faster than the two I linked above. Maybe better suited for what you're looking for regarding fast flying, but based on some of the gear he uses, I doubt it's a budget option.

Done all that making my own stuff.

I haven't a spectrometr to tune them, so I had to cycle through & test the range of each band & channels to find the best one. I give up on one of them the other two work well in my park. So they just backup, but I got plenty of antennas.
& enough coax to last for years.

:rolleyes: ... I've found that it's not enough to just make 'em you hafta tune 'em too !
The easiest way to do that (unless you've got a few thousand to invest in test gear) is by using RSSI.
Remember any RX ant can be used as TX for tuning porpoises .. nyuck nyuck ... if it transmits better, it'll receive better too ;)

The helical antenna are worth making for long range. Although factory made antenna are tuned for 5.8ghz they may work better on a slightly different channel, say 5.6 or 5.9ghz.
The last few I bought I spent a few packs cycling through & test the range.
The most consistent are the aomway.
They all run bang on 5.7 or 5.8, so I use them. I didn't know about any of this until a year in. Your finding out about the working of a quad. You don't realise the fpv system could be a hobby all by itself.
I just whacked the antenna on, got a picture & hey ho it's working. Now that I know the ins & outs of a quad, you just pick other things up in the quest for knowledge. There is loads of useful info I come across, intend to implement & forget. You wanna see my bookmark list.
I just got an uxxi to try & intend to buy a pair of TBS stubbys. I got a decent range of different types & brands. Make my own mind up what the best is.

:) ... Further thoughts on the antenna making process:
Precision is key, just a few millimeters makes a BIG difference (even more so on 5.8 than 2.4).

ALSO there is another important thing to keep in mind:
There are the physical measurements AND THEN there are electrical measurements. Electrical measurements trump the physical ones !
At the point where the solder connection attaches any element of the antenna to the structure (the antenna as a whole) that point of electrical
contact (and the amount of space the solder connection takes up on the antenna wire) alters the physical measurement.

In other words, if there is lap joint where (e.g.) 2 millimeters of antenna wire lays on the connection and then there's the solder joint
that flows 1 millimeter up onto the wire too, then that precisely cut 52.93 millimeter long wire is actually only about 49.93 which will
throw everything off. :eek:
