Motor advice + parts list review

Hi all,

So, I am new to Quads, but not to electronics/programming. I have an out of the box Heli which I can fly reasonably well (although response time is terrible!), and now wish to progress onto a DIY Quad build.

My overall requirements are basic (FPV, GPS)

To start I am going to ignore the FPV requirements but wish to plan ahead and somewhat future proof the setup.

Attached is a pdf of my required parts and optional parts (optional parts to be purchased at a later date)

The advice I am seeking is regarding:
  • Motors (NTM PROP DRIVE SERIES 2830-1100KV - will these do the job nicely or are they far too overpowered?)
  • Props (have absolutely no idea)
  • Transmitter module for the 9XR
  • Receiver module
  • Camera setup in the 'optional parts' area of the pdf (are all the components compatible, have I made any glaring mistakes etc!)
The weight of the craft without camera (and associated electronics) is 1.235kg and 1.319kg with camera (to be added to the setup later).

Now, I do like a little bit of speed and agility, so I'm hoping that the motors I have picked will give me the responsiveness and agility that is to my liking.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Mark

Hi mate i will try and give you some info to help you work out
motors high kv motors rev high eat flight times , low kv motor are a slower rev but give loads of torque and will turn large blades and gives better flight time .
For FPV and long flight times your need a 4 cell battery about 5000mah min , 8000mah would be great but watch the weight some times a 6000mah will be better
now for fpv i would go to www.rcmodelreviews.com or the same but on you tube watch this guys videos on googles ,base station ,fpv cameras you will learn so much about what you doing and pit falls
DJI NAZA system is one of the best but is about £260 for flight control board with gps return home fail safe this is a must on fpv as if you go out of range you £2900 set up will come home not be lost for good
FPV quads are really all about being a stable camera platform, will never fly like an acro quad will , i will leave you a link for ecalc to help you work out set ups if you only know weight of frame just put it in without drive this will then work out overall weight , and a link to rc model reviews

Hi Neil,

Thank you so much for the info! that's a great help!

The videos are fantastic - that guy sure is charismatic!

The DVR recorder is actually the one I had picked anyway in the attached pdf but is branded as a Boscam RC800 (not FoxTech RC800). At least I was on the right track!

I've signed up to eCalc and will will continue to figure it out (in some cases it requires more info than is provided with the product information on the internet though).

As a side note - apologies for the late reply, I work 2pm-9pm, then headed straight to the sack (for today's early start!)

I'll definitely do some research based on the YouTube chanel and that same website - it looks like an invaluable resource.

Cheers

Mark

BRUCE is a really clever guy , my wife finds him boring , but i find the info he give a real help.
ecalc works in a strange way some times i found the best way is to find the frame you want ie talon v2 thats weight is 280 grms , so put that in without drive , now ecalc will add the weights for all the other parts , if your going FPV find the weights for the FPV parts and add this to frame weight at start , then start adding motors battery esc, if you cant find a total match for battery go as close as you can under the battery your looking at ,get flight time , the do it again over the spec of the battery so if its say 2200mah 40c and you can only find 2100/ 40c then 2300/40c
Look at the time difference between the 2 and add half that figure to the lower spec battery it will give you a approx time then ( say 10mins lower spec.... 14mins higher spec so 12 mins approx ) the battery spec is out of date on ecalc shame its so handy a tool
Any way Mark i do strange shifts too so i will try and answer as fast as i can mate

Very true, but i also found hobby king is very good if you know what you want is very cheap , some people buy from hobby king and resale on e bay with a big mark up , so its a no brainer , buy from hobby king in the first place

Also these Ntm motors are crap. Plain and simple. Spend a couple more dollars and get some decent motors. Sunny sky motors are light years better at little cost difference.

why are NTM motors crap as you put it i used them never had a problem with them ,i know loads of people that have use and are still using them with no problems at all so where does the crap come in

We'll usually the truth hurts slightly. Yes they are brushless motor, but these quads rely on gyros gps electronics all which don't like vibration much. I am well aware many people have these motors and I would say they are getting exactly what you are paying for. A cheap motor that gets the quad off the ground but with the money you plunk down on these quads I wouldn't put them in. If you want a quad that can take off and be ok then use em. If you want a quad that runs nice and you can afford another 10 dollars then try something else. Simply not worth it( in my opinion). If you like them, keep using them. but why not recommend some that are decent with proof scientific or otherwise to back up your claim. I think you can check just about any motor against the NTMs on YouTube and come up with your own conclusions. Like all things you get out of it what you put in. Good equipment usually equal a good outcome. Again just my opinion you are entirely entitled to your own.

well i have never had a problem or vibration from the motors , some have to come into a hobby on a limited spend so $80 a motor for t motors will kill the hobby for a lot of people , my boys quad was £179 RTF cant run a camera unless it has a really good anti vib mounts , my quads which has NTM motors can lifts 3 times more weight and will carry a camera just zip tied to it with no vibration , so cant see what your getting on about , if we all had loads of money to spend then we would ,but if you have not then you have to go with what we can afford and for a newbie just starting out who does not really know if is the hobby for them its a lot of money to throw away
