Modability questions?

Greetings all, I'm new to the quadcopter/drone world and just made my first purchase. I chose the X5c-1 as my starter, to get me used to handling and control before I move on someday.

It occurs to me though, that similar circuitry and electronics are used in things like Airsoft guns and other toys/hobbies. Which leads me to the question... How moddable are most of these quadcopters?

Are motors things you can swap out fairly easily, or are you then getting too deep into the ''science'' aspect of things... I.E. Too much torque/lift for a frame etc. My question being, if I want to dump a few extra bucks in the future to upgrade my X5c-1, higher rpms/better props/longer range... Is this platform just TOO entry level to mod?

And addressing the science aspect, is there a way to determine what it's capabilities are? How can I tell what will be TOO much for it's frame or other parts?

Dug around on here for a good thread on this question but didn't turn anything up. Won't be offended if the Mod's move this or if someone can point me in the right direction.

Most of 'mods' you'll see are to increase range of the TX and change the angle of the camera.

These folks do list some trick motors for it though.

Best to just use it, crash it and move on. That said some spare motors and props are good to have. And don't lose the prop screws, spare props don't include them.

And if you choose to use the prop guards and fly around trees (and power or cable lines) try this 'mod'.

Hack off the 'hooks' as shown. And for all those all white prop quads I always use a jumbo black Sharpie to blacken the bottom of the lead/front props (prop guards too if you use them) as it helps with orientation, especially when you are first starting out.

Image isn't showing up for me, but thanks for the reply. I kinda figured as much I guess? I mean, doesn't seem to be a lot of sense dumping a ton of money into the $50 quad... So does this also apply for higher-end purchases?

Tell us what you want it it do and I am sure we may be able to help you come up with how to mod it, they can be modified in many ways, depends what you have and what you want it to do. The hobby grade are infinitely modable, and run about the same as a nice arisoft gun. As for swapping out bigger motors on toy grade mutirotors, I have been experimenting with it and have found you can, especially if you do them all at once. You have to do props and it won't work on geared motors.

Well I'd like to increase thrust and carrying capacity, possibly to put a moderately better camera and FPV setup. From what I gather there is only so much one can do to increase battery life... I know in airsoft you can't just jump from Ni-Mh or Ni-Cad to li-po, it'll burn your circuitry out... I assume it's similar in this game?

No, only things that matters are: amp supply and voltage. But it'll use Lipo and that is the lightest. You could build a hobby quad for ~$240, and upgrade it as you go.

Well my X5c-1 gets here Friday, i'll dink around with it for a few weeks or so and then look into buying something a little more in that range. I'm glad to hear that you can pretty much go Lipo from the get-go though, that's awesome. I'd like to get used to flying this thing, then step up. But I figure as I get more and more used to a mid-level quad I'd like to maybe have the X5c-1 as my franken-copter... See what kindof stuff I can do to it.

I'd stick with the one I had and later upgrade to a hobby grade when I got good with flying simply as they are more versatile and repairable.
