Install New FPV Video Board

Hello All,

I am new to this forum. I was on DIYDrones.com, but I never seem to get responses to my posts. I think a lot of those guys are above my level. Heck, everyone's above my level.

Anyways,

I have a Iris+ with 3DR's First View FPV system using the Black Pearl RC801 Monitor. I am having trouble with my video cutting out and not working. I spoke with 3DR and they think I need to replace the video transmitter board. 3DR does not sell only the board, but they said I should be able to order almost any board online and it will work.

I ordered a Boscam TS351 5.8G Transmitter Board. When I try and get it to connect to my existing monitor (Black Pear RC801) I can't find a channel that works.

Is there a step that I am missing on setting this up?

Anyone have to do this before?

You didn't provide any real details.

I imagine you've tried to work out the matching channels. Looks like Ch 5 on the Boscam is 5885. For the monitor you would need Band E/Ch 5 for 5885. There are many combos that can be used as long as the frequency matches.
 
Yea, I tried Band E with every channel and none of them gave me a picture. I was wondering if I missed a step or some other calibration. I'm not sure what to try next.
 
Well I spoke to soon. About as long as it took me to send this email 3-4 minutes, I went back to check on it and my picture was gone. Now it acts like my original board and I can't get a picture.
Any other suggestions?
 
Well that seems to point to the RC801 Monitor as the actual source of the problem. Do you know anyone who can try it on their system?

I don't know anyone else that can check the monitor, but I am finding out that it starts up and has a picture. It will run for 4 minutes and then loose the picture. If you turn everything off for 15 minutes it will start up and run for another 4 minutes. The power to the Transmitter shows 12 volts. It kind of acts like something is heating up and shutting down, but I don't know what that would be. Any suggestions on what else to check?

Well many TXs tend to get warm/hot at 12V, actually flying around helps to cool it down. You got a fan laying around? Aim it at your gear and see if that helps. Is the heat shrink tubing covering the heat sink, if so cut it way so the fins are exposed to open air.
 
I may have solved the issue of my FPV cutting out after 4 minutes.

I found someone online saying the GoPro turned off their USB port after a short time when they did a firmware update.

I have a SmartFPV GoPro Video Board (http://www.smartfpv.com/downloads/manuals/SmartFPV GoPro Video Board - User Guide.pdf)
that plugs into the 30 pin bus on the back of the GoPro. This by passes the USB and the picture stays on. So far I tested it for 20 minutes without any picture loss. I will fly it and see how it works.
