I'm as careful as I can be. I get out early & late when not many ppl about.
Summer I can get up & out for dawn & get 2-3hrs in before work. & it goes dark about 10:30 - 11:00, so if I charge some in work & a few more @ home I can get back out for an hour or two. So if I wanted, even on a workday I could get 4-5hrs of flying time. I very rarely go flying @mid day or peak times. If I do it's on the unused fairway at the local golf coarse.
We tend to get alot of idiotic Manned aircraft around that area & parasailors.
But if you go out @ the right times you shouldn't get any trouble.
Not many ppl going to notice there TV going funny when my 600mw whizzes past @4:30am:D

flying your drone over grand canyon???
is that ever legal?? .....Dought if you get it ever back to you before the battery is dead
if it's goodbye drone and you end up going down that long canyon and it is hard coming back up

No, the Grand Canyon is a national park, so you are not allowed to fly your drone there.

Sad really. Lovely stuff to film. Quad footprint is virtually zero it can only be down to noise scaring animals or whatever. Maybe if they allowed ppl on licence say so many a week. It's not fair only movie companies & their ilk get to use this for profit when the average Joe can't. Surely someone walking about does more damage than a quad landing now & again. From what I've seen the grand canyon is like 80% rock. Quad meet rock,
Rock meet quad. Rock wins everytime.
Mind you you don't want dirty Lipo's oozing poisons 100' down a ravine you got absolutely no intention of climbing down. OK no drones o_O

Yep, from what I've read it's about noise scaring the wildlife and also annoying the other visitors.
While I'd love to fly at the Grand Canyon, I'm more sad I can't film at Big Bend NP, as my son and I go camping/backpacking there a couple times a year. Oh well, at least I can still bring my regular camera to the national parks - it'll have to do.

Fine just as well to take your camcorder to the grand canyon.
So where can a person enjoy his or her drone?
there is hardly and good space to fly , the builders keep on taken up space.
yet here the grand canyon university is taken up way too much space
Hardly any one goes there must schooling is online because it safer
yet you hear about school killings, and when a business goes out of business
it nothing but a husk of it's former self.
right now the university is big enough to be a local mega hospital

so where can we fly our drones?
guess we yell and cripe at the city for space

I fly my baby one indoors and my larger one outdoors in a soccer field park (4-5 fields) owned by the city. Can't fly there on weekends in soccer season, but it's empty most of the rest of the year.
Some say to avoid schools, but I see folks flying at the one of the local high schools (plenty of land) which I may try one time on a weekend. You will have to check local laws - lots of city parks you can fly at if they are more than 5 miles from airports. I recently checked out the rules about state parks, and unfortunately it is a no-no for most state parks in Texas, but it may be different where you are. Another option is to see on facebook (or whatever) for local quad or RC groups to see where they recommend and fly. There is an RC group field near me, by I haven't checked it out yet or asked if they are quad friendly.

Grand Canyon has helicopter tours, I was there for a few days on 2 different road trips about 2 weeks apart (upwards of 7000 miles of driving).

Not a place I'd want to fly a drone as there would be a good chance of never seeing it again.

So, why all the restrictions on drones? Because of all the stupid things people have done with them in the past. Laws are created to stop other people from doing the things that other people did before the law existed. You can probably blame the inventors and manufacturers for these because of their wanton push to sell these ungoverned devices. Much the same as the smart phone turning people into dumb bells. The law never seems to exist until AFTER something bad happens as a result of using things for other than what they were intended.As it is said, hindsight is 20/20. Consider the banning of the AR-15 Assault Rifle because of the Florida School Massacre and the Las Vegas Massacre. If they didn't happen, would the gun have been banned? No, of course not.

This is exactly right. While I agree that manufacturers and inventors could and should do more, I think users are equally responsible. I think most of us have enough common sense to not fly our quads near an airport, for example, but the news shows us that not everyone is that sensible.

Several years back, my brother-in-law nearly vaporized himself by driving 85 mph on a freeway while playing clash of clans on his phone. While I'm sad for his wife and kids, my internal reaction was "what did he think would happen?" Another year or so later, the state and local cities started creating laws banning anything but phone calls while driving. I can clearly see when I drive around that the laws have almost zero effect on drivers - way too many are still texting and driving. It's unfortunate that it takes events like this to drive changes, but it's the way it is. People want to do what they want to do and too many people think "it won't happen to me" - until it does - sometimes with deadly results.

We are seeing and will continue to see the same thing with our hobby.

oh last year my udi flying saucer drone caught a truant playing hooky from school
yes he was 13 I was in the local city test flying my ufo drone when my drone spotted him in the bushes smoking
l found out when I look on my smart phone with the wifi camera what was I to do? had no choice but to contact the school texted the video to the school official and the truant official came pick him up and the school notified his parnents.

MARS KNOWS lol

Just a comment or two:

I used to live in Az. (Fountain Hills), though that was before I got into this hobby. Be extremely careful about flying in any parks as most do not allow drones as they are a noise nuisance as well as a disturbance to wildlife. Watch out in particular for Maricopa County Sheriffs they were generally jerks, but now that Joe Arpaio is no longer sheriff, things may have changed. Still be wary...

I can't offer any advice concerning the quadcopter you are considering - looks like a Phantom knock-off and I personally would steer clear and get a DJI - the Mavic is a fine machine but the Phantom 4 Pro has a better camera, if that is important to you. Whatever you decide, I would suggest getting it ASAP as our butthead POTUS is putting in place tariffs on Chinese products, which I fear will include drones.

It is on the way here, Amazon was thinking of using drones to delivery packages to your door if you saw their old commercials ..
I think we get our own area to fly, just need to file for some property I saw this done when I was in rc aircraft club...

The only around to enjoy this hobby either get some land away from the city
or join a rc aircrfaft club

you ask the state land and mine official where it be ok to fly your drone in peace

Then amazon put a patent in for exploding drones, if anything went wrong. Damn shame I was looking forward to free parts with my delivery of parts.
