First transmiter/reciever?

Looking at building my first quad, and am looking around for a transmiter and reciever. Looking at Hoby King and BAnggood, I see transmiters from $29.00 up to $1,200.00. I want to get something that I will not outgrow after just one or two quads and will be reliable. While only $29.00 would be nice. I have a feeling it would fall in the bairly usable garbage level. Any models/brands to use/not use?

I'm strongly considering the 9X Turnigy for $59. Maybe I missed it but is the 9XR the better option ?

Hi mate the 9XR pro is the top one , but dont forget your need a module pack for what protocol you want it on , also look at the size of receivers if they only make big ones like flysky , if you get a mini quad its hard to fit in the bigger receiver
I like the orange ones due to the fact you can use spektrum or orange receivers , plus some fcb can use sat receivers on spektrum and futaba , so you dont need a main receiver
At the end of the day its personal taste what do you like the look of

Does the 9X need a module for protocol ? I guess I don't even know what that does.

The receiver size shouldn't matter as I want to use it on a 600 mm quad.

Someone commented about the 9X transmitting range.
Is it plenty strong for a large field ?
I don't plan on flying out of sight ,,,, ha ha

Hi all it is , if you buy spektrum any receiver will be on that protocol, Futaba has its own too , so when you get the X9 you fit a transmitter module for the protocol you want it to work on , If you go for the spektrum module it will work on the spektrum receivers and should work on the orange ones as well ( they are clones of spektrum) the only thing your need to know is spektrum work on the DSM2 and the new DSMX ,the module may only do DSM2 so you will need to be careful you buy the right ones
The XR9 pro is all singing and dancing if you want to go FPV the monitor plug in to the transmitter so I have been told , it has its own web site for set up manuals ,forum ,help ,etc
Hobby king do loads of upgrade parts and the frsky does FPV head tracking
I just paid out £300 for a DX9 and the XR9 does far more

Appreciate the info and I'm sure it's better.

To keep things within budget I'll probably go with just the Turnigy 9X.

I'm sure your correct as we paid A LOT for our Futaba 3PK's back in the day.

BUT ,,, it's 5 times the money of a Turnigy 9X :(

I know mate i just paid out £300 for the DX9 , it is worth the money to have a good transmitter the gimbals are nicer to fly with too , wait and see your love it

Now ,, whats the story about the receiver being designed for a quad ??

The 9X DOES NOT say for quad use and I read somewhere about the specific receiver.

Ok receivers are receivers , some are small some are larger , you need a min of 4 channels, 6 channels+ are better as you have a spare for lights etc
Some flights control boards work as a receiver so you plug in sat receivers( not all protocols) , some do S-Bus so only have a single wire to FCB from receiver( not all protocols)
I had a look on the hobby king site the X9 with receiver does aero so will work with the quad ( make sure you buy mode 2) you will need male to male servo leads to link from receiver to FCB
