First days of quading, What happened.

Fishy Tree

Yup, I wrecked again...
Hey guys, I'm new to Quadrotors. My first and only quad (so far) is a LaTrax Alias. I just thought I'd share the experiences I had in my first days of quading. (not sure if that's a word)

Well the first thing I learned was a valuable lesion about wind on my very first flight. DON'T FLY IN IT! I took her up to maybe 35-40 feet when a gust of wind took her about 50 feet away then strait into the ground. Breaking one arm. =/

after ordering a new frame, and gluing the old one. I took her back out. My next 4 battery packs went flawlessly. While my glue fix, though sloppy, held strong. I really got the feel for it down much better. Then I decided to try "Expert" mode. Needless to say it didn't go well. I keep her up for a second then crashed her into a chain-link fence at full speed. Breaking the glued arm and tearing one of the motor wires in said arm.

So 2 out 6 of my first flights ended tragically. She is now grounded until at least Thursday when my frame arrives. I should be able to re-solder the wire no problem. I'll be posting a picture of the damage later.

Wow that sucks! I hope that once i build my quads i will take it slow or risk breaking them :/. Let us know what happens!

Hi Guys dont kick your self to hard, This is part of learning to fly WE CRASH some times no damage, other times we do snap parts , toy quads are the worse as parts are not always easy to get and replace , So as soon as possible jump up to a hobby grade these are not tougher but are much easy to fix , Now as to flying there is a thing called over control this is what all newbies do
What you need to do is not hold stick forward , Dab to stick what I mean is dab stick forward and let it centre if the quad does not move Dab again it will start to move as it starts to slow dab again dont forget to stop the quad by giving back stick , you need to try and be a second ahead of the quad so you can stop flying into things by stopping or changing direction in time
Control is every thing set out a box shape in the garden and fly in the box once you can do this make the box bigger all the time your doing this your Brain will start to remember ( muscle memory) your then start to fly with out thinking of what your doing to control the quad , always keep it nose forward as the quad will follow stick inputs , Once you master this then start to angle the quad till you flying nose in Now the controls are back to front right is left ,left is right , forward is backwards, backwards is forward they only thing that stays the same is the throttle
Dont rush its not a race your learn it in your own pace, try to fly 5/10 mins then take a break your learn faster then keeping going till you drop or the quad is smashed
Sorry its a long post but I wanted you guys not to feel your doing some thing wrong your NOT . As for the dabbing the stick as your skill comes on your stop dabbing and start holding the sticks more as your control becomes faster and natural

Yeah, I'd like to get something like a DJI Phantom II one day, they seem to be fairly popular. For now however, The Alias parts are cheap and easy to come by, so I'll stick with it for now.

"you need to try and be a second ahead of the quad so you can stop flying into things by stopping or changing direction in time"

Thanks lol, I was aware of that! It's just actually doing it. :)

ALL FIXED!! NOT!!
one of the main shaft bearings had to be forced out because it basically disintegrated. I have no Idea how, but It was almost certainly my fault.
So I order them =/ another $13 down! Man this hobby is pricey! but I'm already in love with it, so IT'S ALL GOOD!

On the bright side, My re-soldering of the motor wire worked, so I don't need any new motors!

Ps. If you have the quad, get the upgraded motors from Micro Motor Warehouse. They rock!

Hi fishy Tree, (pricey ) it does feel that way at the start, I started on rc helis and that cost about £30 per 10 second flight :(
But it does come right one day your be flying and all of a sudden your think I have flown now for weeks no mishap
Thats it then you have stepped over the wall and now are flying well :D takes time but it will come right then your really start to enjoy the hobby

I am a fairly novice flyer, so I agree that the hobby is pricey haha. When you are not fixing crashes you are upgrading :). 2 hours of repair for every hour of flight xD.

Haha, I spend easily four times as much repairing, upgrading, and building it, than I have flown it. Yes, I did use different tenses on purpose haha.
